10 THINGS TO DO IN PATMOS

Patmos is a captivating Greek island, part of the Dodecanese island group. Patmos offers a unique blend of religious heritage, natural beauty, and traditional charm, making it a captivating destination for travelers seeking a rich cultural experience and a peaceful retreat in the Aegean Sea. Whether you’re exploring ancient monasteries, lounging on beautiful beaches, or savoring local cuisine, Patmos promises unforgettable memories and a deep connection to its timeless allure.

Angel’s tip: To fully experience Patmos, you should plan to spend at least 4-5 days on the island. Renting a car will greatly enhance your convenience, allowing you to explore all the island’s beautiful and historic sites at your own pace.

DODECANESE ISLANDS

The Dodecanese Islands are a group of 12 major islands and numerous smaller ones in the southeastern Aegean Sea, near the coast of Turkey. Here are the primary islands in the Dodecanese:

  3. Kalimnos
  4. Karpathos
  5. Patmos
  6. Astypalaia
  7. Leros
  8. Kasos
  9. Nisyros
  10. Tilos
  11. Symi
  12. Chalki

Additionally, the Dodecanese includes several smaller islands such as Agathonissi, Kastellorizo, Lipsi, and others.

ACCESS

Patmos does not have an airport, so it is accessible primarily by sea. Here are the main ways to reach Patmos:

By ferry:

  • From Athens (Piraeus Port) : The journey takes approximately 7-9 hours, depending on the type of ferry. You can book your tickets here.
  • from other Dodecanese Islands like Rhodes, Kos, Leros or Kalymnos.
  • from Cyclades Islands like Mykonos and Syros.

By Air and Ferry Combination: You can fly to Samos, Kos or Leros and then take the ferry. Closest is Leros island.

ACCOMMODATION

Patmos offers a variety of accommodation options ranging from luxury hotels to charming guesthouses and budget-friendly apartments. Here are some of the best areas to stay in Patmos:

  • Skala: Best for Convenience and Nightlife till late hours. It is the main port town of Patmos and the largest settlement. It’s a lively area with numerous restaurants, cafes, shops, and easy access to ferry services. Skala is the central hub of Patmos, making it an ideal base for exploring the rest of the island, that’s why I chose it for my accommodation.
  • Chora (the island’s capital): Best for history, scenic views and early drinks. It is known for its picturesque alleys, traditional architecture, and the famous Monastery of Saint John the Theologian.
  • Grikos Bay: Best for Tranquility and beach Access
  • Kampos: Best for families and relaxation.

Here are some of the top things to do and see in Patmos:

1. Explore Chora (Patmos Town)

Chora is the picturesque capital of Patmos, characterized by its whitewashed buildings, narrow alleys, and flower-filled courtyards. Wander through the labyrinthine streets, visit quaint shops and boutiques, and admire panoramic views of the Aegean Sea from the Castle area.

  • Chora is characterized by its whitewashed houses, narrow winding streets, and beautiful courtyards. The architecture is typical of the Cyclades, with flat roofs, wooden shutters, and bougainvillea-covered walls.
  • Byzantine Churches: The village is dotted with small Byzantine churches that add to the spiritual and historical atmosphere of Chora.
  • Panoramic Views: Perched on a hill, Chora offers amazing panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands. The views are particularly spectacular from the monastery and various vantage points around the village.
  • Sunset Spots: Chora is a great place to watch the sunset. The combination of the sea, sky, and traditional architecture creates a magical atmosphere as the sun sets over the horizon.
  • Windmills of Patmos: Dating back to the 16th century, windmills are part of the island’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
  • Cafes and restaurants: The village is home to charming cafes and traditional tavernas where you can enjoy local cuisine and drinks. The ambiance is relaxed and welcoming, making it a perfect place to unwind.
  • Boutique Shops: Chora has a variety of boutique shops selling handmade crafts, local products, and souvenirs. It’s a great place to find unique items and support local artisans.
  • Art Galleries: The village hosts several art galleries that showcase works by local and international artists. These galleries often feature exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, and traditional crafts.

2. Visit the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most important religious landmark on the island. It was founded in the 11th century and houses priceless religious artifacts and manuscripts. Explore the monastery complex, admire its Byzantine architecture, and visit the Cave of the Apocalypse where Saint John is said to have received his revelations. Angel’s tip: You can visit as well the Ecclesiastical Museum of Patmos, located in Chora. This museum houses a valuable collection of religious artifacts, icons, and manuscripts related to the island’s Christian heritage. Admire Byzantine icons, medieval manuscripts, and other treasures showcasing the island’s religious significance.

3. Explore the beaches

Patmos offers a diverse range of beaches, each with its unique charm and appeal. Whether you’re looking for a secluded spot to unwind, a family-friendly beach with amenities, or a picturesque location with stunning views, Patmos has something to offer every beach lover. Don’t forget to explore the local tavernas and enjoy the fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes while visiting these beautiful beaches.

1.Psili Ammos Beach

  • My favorite beach and the best on the island in my opinion, Psili Ammos features fine golden sand and crystal-clear waters. It is relatively secluded, offering a peaceful atmosphere ideal for relaxation. There’s a small taverna nearby serving refreshments and local dishes.
  • It’s accessible by boat from Skala or by a 30-minute hike from Diakofti. Angel’s tip: Check the winds as boats sometimes cannot access the beach via the sea and the only way is on foot.

2. Agriolivadi Beach

  • Agriolivadi is a family-friendly beach with shallow, clear waters and a mix of sand and pebbles. The beach has sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and a few tavernas nearby offer delicious meals and snacks.
  • Located just a few kilometers from Skala, it’s easily accessible by car, scooter, or bicycle.

3. Lambi Beach

  • Famous for its colorful pebbles and clear waters, a relatively quiet beach providing a unique beach experience. There’s also a taverna where you can enjoy traditional Greek dishes.
  • It’s located on the northern part of the island and is accessible by car or scooter.

5. Kambos Beach

  • One of the most popular beaches on the island, known for its fine sand and excellent facilities. It is well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a variety of water sports. There are also several tavernas and cafes nearby.
  • It’s situated about 9 kilometers from Skala and is easily accessible by car or bus.

6. Vagia Beach

  • A tranquil pebbly beach with deep, clear waters, usually quiet and less crowded.
  • It’s located on the northeastern coast of Patmos, accessible by car or scooter.

7. Livadi Geranou Beach

  • A beautiful sandy and pebbly beach with turquoise waters, offering a serene setting. It is relatively secluded, providing a peaceful environment for relaxation.
  • It’s located on the eastern side of the island, accessible by car or scooter.

8. Petra Beach

  • Also known as “Petra” (Rock) Beach, it’s famous for the large rock formation that juts out into the sea.The beach offers stunning views and is great for diving off the rock. It’s less crowded and perfect for those looking to escape the more popular beaches.
  • Located on the southern part of the island, it’s accessible by car or scooter.

9.Didymes beaches: The beach is named “Didimes,” which means “twins” in Greek, because it consists of two adjacent sandy coves separated by a narrow strip of land. Due to its secluded nature and limited accessibility (you need to walk after you park), Didimes Beach tends to be less crowded than other beaches on the island, offering a peaceful environment for visitors.

10.Grikos beach:The beach is situated in a sheltered bay, which protects it from strong winds and waves. This makes the water particularly calm and ideal for swimming. It is well-equipped with facilities, hotels and nearby tavernas and cafes. It is a more developed beach compared to some of the more secluded spots on the island.

4. Visit the Cave of the Apocalypse

Located halfway up the hill between Skala and Chora, this sacred cave is believed to be the place where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelation. Enter the cave to see the small chapel built inside and the fissure in the rock where Saint John received his visions.

Skala is the main port and commercial center of Patmos, offering a mix of traditional charm and modern amenities. Explore the waterfront promenade, visit local cafes and restaurants, and browse through shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts.

6. Hike to Profitis Ilias

Profitis Ilias is the highest peak on Patmos, offering panoramic views of the island and the surrounding Aegean Sea. Embark on a scenic hike to the summit, passing through rugged landscapes and ancient paths, and enjoy breathtaking vistas from the top.

7. Enjoy Sunset views from Petra Beach

Petra Beach, located near Chora, is renowned for its unique rock formations and stunning sunset views. Relax on the beach, climb the rock and witness the magical colors of the sunset painting the sky.

8. Experience delicious food

Patmos boasts a rich culinary tradition, with restaurants and tavernas offering a variety of delicious dishes made from fresh local ingredients. Indulge in seafood delicacies, traditional Greek mezes, and specialties like Patmian cheese and honey. Patmos is known for its excellent food, with a variety of dining options ranging from traditional Greek tavernas to more upscale restaurants. The island’s cuisine highlights fresh, locally sourced ingredients, including seafood, vegetables, and herbs.

Here are some recommendations for great places to eat in Patmos:

1.To Kyma in Aspri, an exquisite restaurant with delicious food, perfect cocktails and outstanding location next to the sea. Not cheap. Angel’s tip: Reservation is a must!

2.Benetos in Sapsila: a well-known, upscale restaurant offering a mix of Greek and international dishes with a creative twist. Beautiful sea views, excellent service, and a romantic atmosphere.

3. Loza in Chora: Delicious food with stunning views, amazing for sunset. Excellent service and vibes.

4.Astivi in Chora: Great cocktails, beautiful location that sometimes in the evening it turns into a bar. A bit expensive though with great food of an elegant modern twist. Angel’s tip: Reservation is essential during high season.

5. Tzivaeri in Chora: A traditional taverna located in the heart of Chora that serves classic Greek dishes made from fresh, local ingredients. Cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and authentic flavors.

6. Pleiades Bar Restaurant in Grikos Bay: Situated in the picturesque Grikos Bay, Pleiades offers a fine dining experience with a focus on Mediterranean cuisine. Elegant setting, excellent wine list, and stunning bay views.

7.Plefsis restaurant in Grikos Bay: a local tavern with mainly seafood next to the sea, great service and flavors with perfect views.

8. Apocalypsis Restaurant in Grikos Bay: Located within the luxurious Patmos Aktis Suites & Spa, Apocalypsis offers a gourmet dining experience with a menu that combines traditional Greek flavors with contemporary techniques. Elegant atmosphere, creative dishes, and excellent service. Perfect for a special occasion or romantic dinner.

9.Ktima Petra in Petra beach: Excellent restaurant with fresh ingredients, thoughtful cooking in a beautiful garden! Totally recommended.

10. Ostria in Skala: Located near the port in Skala, Ostria is known for its fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. The restaurant has a casual, friendly vibe. The outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying the harbor views.

11.To Chiliomodi in Skala: Fresh fish, a family-run restaurant with authentic Greek food. Simple is the best sometimes, right?

12. Flisvos Restaurant in Skala: A family-run restaurant next to the sea offering a mix of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on seafood. The menu includes both classic and modern dishes.

13. To Tsipouradiko Mas in Skala: This is a popular spot among locals and tourists alike with wide range of traditional Greek and seafood dishes, next to the sea as you can see below. Angel’s tip: It is famous with good reviews but at least the day I went, I didn’t like the food so I am not sure if I recommend it.

9. Enjoy nightlife

While Patmos is known primarily for its spiritual and serene atmosphere, it also offers a lively and enjoyable nightlife scene. The island’s nightlife is more relaxed and sophisticated compared to some of the more party-centric Greek islands.

Due to the monastery, all bars in Chora close at 3am and the party continues in Skala. Sapsila, Arion, Kasbah, Remezzo are some of the bars you can go for drinks in Skala while Pougki Bar, Theo’s Bar, Astivi are in Chora.

10. Take a Boat Trip to nearby islands

Explore the neighboring islands of the Dodecanese, including Lipsi, Leros and Arkoi, on a boat excursion from Patmos. Or even better devote some days there too. Angel’s tip: I stayed some days in Patmos and some in Leros. I visited the other islands during the day.

But if you have limited time, enjoy at least a day tour in them and some other small islets nearby like Makronisi, Aspronisi, Marathi… Discover secluded beaches, hidden coves and charming villages, and enjoy snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing in pristine natural settings.

Since I stayed 1 week on the island, I had time and one day I took the ferry and spent the day in Leipsi island and another I had a day trip to nearby islands with stops to all! It was fantastic and I totally recommend it!
