Located in the heart of the Argo-Saronic Gulf, there are 3 ways you can reach it:
- By ferry from Piraeus port (40€ one way)
- Driving to Metochi village in Peloponnese (2.5-3 hrs from Athens) & then small ferry to Hydra (7.5€ one way)
- Driving to Ermioni village in Peloponnese (2.5-3 hrs from Athens) & then small ferry to Hydra (10€ one way)
Angel’s tip: There are water taxis up to 8-10 people you can call to pick you up! (60€ one way from Metochi for example)

1.HYDRA HARBOR & TOWN
Stroll around beautiful Hydra harbor! It is the heart of the island lined with cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. It’s perfect for a leisurely walk among the donkeys that island has.
2. KAMINIA PORT
Kaminia is a charming and picturesque village with small fishing boats located on Hydra Island, just a 20 minutes walk from Hydra Town. The village has several tavernas and cafes where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood and traditional Greek cuisine.
Angel’s tip: Great sunset there and Kaminia with Castello beach nearby.
3. BEACHES
Hydra Island, though not known for its extensive sandy beaches, offers several charming and picturesque spots where visitors can enjoy the clear, turquoise waters. Here are some of the notable beaches on Hydra:
- Vlychos Beach: A small, pebbly beach located about 30-40 minutes on foot from Hydra Town or easily accessible by water taxi. Known for its clear waters and tranquil atmosphere. There are sunbeds, umbrellas, and a few tavernas nearby.
- Mandraki Beach: One of the few sandy beaches on the island, located about 20 minutes from Hydra Town by foot. Offers sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar. It’s a great spot for families and those looking for a more comfortable beach experience.
- Spilia Beach: a rocky swimming spot close to Hydra Town. Popular for diving into the deep, clear waters.
- Kaminia Beach: A small, picturesque and quiet beach in the fishing village of Kaminia, about a 20-minute walk from Hydra Town, as mentioned above. It offers a peaceful setting with a nearby taverna and stunning views.
- Bisti Beach: A beautiful, secluded beach located on the southern tip of the island, accessible by boat. Surrounded by pine trees and offering clear waters, it’s ideal for snorkeling and diving. Angel’s tip: Sunbeds and umbrellas are available during summer.
- Agios Nikolaos Beach: Another secluded beach accessible only by boat (30 minute water-taxi ride or a 3 hrs hike from Hydra port), it is bigger than Bisti beach & it is located on the western side of the island. Known for its pebbles and crystal-clear waters, it’s a serene spot perfect for a day trip. Angel’s tip: You can find a beach bar with sunbeds here during summer season and note that usually there is no signal on your mobile.
- Avlaki Beach: A small, pebbly beach near Hydra Town, often less crowded. Offers a peaceful environment and clear waters, perfect for a quiet swim.
- Limnioniza Beach: One of the most beautiful and remote beaches on Hydra, located on the eastern side of the island. Accessible by boat or a challenging hike. Known for its stunning turquoise waters and peaceful surroundings.
- Hydroneta: not exactly a beach as it is a rocky swimming area with cemented sun decks and blue waters. The waters at Hydronetta are known for their clarity, making it a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling, next to Hydra town and harbor.
Angel’s tip: While Hydra may not boast the best beaches in Greece, its waters are beautifully clear and inviting.
4. VIEWS
You can enjoy stunning views in all the island! Don’t skip to walk till the Andreas Miaoulis statue & take a picture from there. The statue depicts Admiral Andreas Miaoulis in a heroic pose, honoring his leadership and contributions during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). The statue is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a reminder of the island’s rich historical heritage.

Dokos is reached by private yacht or sea taxi from Hydra, Ermioni or Spetses and offers visitors the opportunity to swim in turquoise waters and gaze at the rocky shoreline and olive trees of the island, a wonderful setting. There is a longer hike that takes you from Hydra Town to the ancient settlement of Palamidas that you can explore ancient ruins, enjoy panoramic views, and experience the peacefulness of Hydra’s countryside.

Don’t miss Amalour, Papagalos and Pirate bar.
Hydroneta is a must too for early drinks. A popular spot located right on the rocks, offering a range of refreshments, cocktails, and light meals. It’s a perfect place to relax and enjoy the stunning views, especially during sunset.

If you love museums, visit Historical one at the port ! Learn about Hydra’s rich maritime history and its role in the Greek War of Independence.
11. DAY TRIP TO DOKOS ISLAND
Dokos Island, located near Hydra in the Saronic Gulf, is a charming and lesser-known destination that offers a peaceful retreat and beautiful natural scenery. Dokos is known for its rugged terrain, with rocky hills, clear blue waters, and secluded beaches. The island is largely uninhabited, offering a tranquil escape from more crowded tourist spots.
Dokos is famous for the discovery of one of the oldest known shipwrecks, dating back to the Early Helladic period (around 2200 BC). This archaeological find adds a layer of historical intrigue to the island. There are also remnants of Byzantine and Venetian settlements, making it an interesting spot for history enthusiasts.
Angel’s tip: The clear waters around Dokos are perfect for snorkeling and diving, especially near the site of the ancient shipwreck.
Access: Several companies in Hydra offer organized day trips to Dokos. These typically include boat transportation, guided tours, and sometimes lunch or refreshments. For a more personalized experience, you can rent a private boat or charter a yacht to visit Dokos. This option allows you to explore the island at your own pace and enjoy a customized itinerary.
Most tours and rentals depart from Hydra Town harbor. The journey to Dokos usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes by boat.
Since Dokos is largely uninhabited, there are no facilities or shops. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and any other essentials you might need.
12. TASTE AMYGDALOTA
One of the most famous desserts on Hydra Island is Amygdalota, a traditional Greek almond cookie that is particularly popular in Hydra. Don’t miss to try them!
