Koufonisia islands are absolutely magical! Literally a small heaven on Earth!
The island complex consists of 2, the upper (pano) Koufonissi and the lower (kato) Koufonissi.
- Pano Koufonissi is the most popular, with the main port having ferries calling from the mainland, hotels, apartments for rent, famous beaches, many taverns, bars and plenty of options!
- Kato Koufonissi is mainly for daily excursions (departing from the upper one), reaching the beaches by boat taxis (15-20 minutes distance) and free camping, with only a local beautiful tavern available.
LOCATION
It is located in Cyclades island complex between Naxos and Amorgos and belong to Small Cyclades. Islands close by: Irakleia, Schinousa and Keros which is uninhabited.
BEST SEASON
During late July and first two weeks of August, the island is super busy. However, this year the island was fully booked since June for the rest of the summer till early September… Angel’s tip: Some people book their accommodation for Koufonisia already since the previous summer, so I would strongly suggest to book your accommodation latest on April/May for July-August.
ACCOMMODATION
Finding accommodation in Koufonisia can be challenging, as the island’s popularity means that rooms fill up quickly. It’s essential to book several months in advance to secure a place to stay. The best option is to stay in Chora (the main town), as it offers unparalleled convenience. Why? Chora’s central location means that the port, beaches, bars, and restaurants are all within walking distance, making it easy to explore the island without needing a car or scooter. Furthermore, Chora is the heart of Koufonisia, bustling with life and offering a great mix of traditional charm and modern amenities.
Some basic apartments in Chora (don’t expect something wow!) with convenient location are: Christina’s house, Sohoro, Veggera rooms, Margarita’s studios, Posidonion hotel, To kyma, Teal Blue and so many others around!
Angel’s tip: Once I visited the island for a bachelorette party, we stayed in some beautiful suites with amazing view and swimming pool called “Aeris suites” in Pori area. Very convenient for us as we were 20 girls but cars were absolutely necessary. If you don’t have a car, stay in town. They have rooms in Chora as well with the same name but more expensive than others you can find on the island.

USEFUL INFO
- There is not public transport on the island.
- You can rent a scooter on the island.
- You can find water taxis to visit the beaches of the island.
- The island has only 1 taxi . Tel: +30698 73 37 290 . Angel’s tip: call him in advance since there is only one and has many requests despite the small distances.
Koufonisia is a wonderful Greek island in Cyclades that you need to visit ASAP!
See below why:
1. THE ISLAND ON FOOT
While having a car or motorcycle in Koufonisia is possible, it’s not necessary for most travelers. The island’s compact size and excellent accessibility make it easy to explore on foot. By staying in Chora, the main town, you’ll find that most essential spots are within walking distance. This includes the port, bars, restaurants, supermarkets, and coffee shops. The town’s layout is pedestrian-friendly, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely stroll to various attractions.
Beaches and Transportation
- Proximity: While most of the island is easily accessible by foot, a couple of beaches are a bit further away from Chora. However, there are convenient solutions:1. Water taxis:
- Frequency: The boats depart every 30 minutes or 1 hour for beaches in Pano Koufonissi during the summer season and their stops are in Foinikas beach, 1 more stop between Fanos and Italida beach and 3rd stop in Pori beach. Phone No. : +30 2285071438, +30 6945 042 548 Prasinos tours and +30 6979682768 Mavros Tours.
- The round trip costs 5 euros. Angel’s tip: We were 12 people together and we chose Mavros tours that was flexible & very kind to come pick us up even after the regular working hours, I guess because island mid of July was not so crowded and we were a large group of people!
2. Walking:
- For those who enjoy hiking and scenic walks, reaching the further beaches on foot is always an option. The island’s natural beauty makes for a pleasant walking experience.
Alternative Transportation
- Motorcycles: If you prefer a bit more mobility, renting a motorcycle can be a fun and convenient way to get around. It offers the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace. I don’t think there is any rental company for cars.
Angel’s tip: in case you want to visit the island by your own car book some weeks in advance since very often tickets are sold out!
2. UNREAL TURQUOISE WATERS
Pano Koufonissi, renowned for its stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters, offers a perfect escape for those looking to relax and enjoy natural beauty. Most beaches in Pano Koufonissi are unorganized, meaning there are no facilities like sunbeds, umbrellas, or beach bars. To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, come prepared:
- Beach Essentials: Bring your own tents or beach umbrellas to provide shade during the hot days.
- Water and Snacks: Carry plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the day.
- Portable Fridge: A small portable fridge can be very handy to keep your drinks and food cool, making your beach day even more pleasant.
Ammos beach: located in the heart of Chora on Pano Koufonissi, this beach is a prime destination for visitors seeking convenience and beauty. It is situated right next to the main port in Chora, making it one of the most accessible beaches on the island and its proximity to the town means you can easily reach it on foot from most accommodations in Chora. The fine, golden sand makes it an ideal spot for sunbathing and relaxing. I love it!
Foinikas beach: 5 minutes by boat, 15 minutes on foot and 4′ driving. A beautiful beach known for its soft sand and shallow crystal clear waters, making it ideal for families and relaxation! There is a restaurant at the beach with drinks as well.
Fanos beach: Another wonderful beach with sand, 10 minutes by boat and 5′ drive from Chora. You can find a beach bar as well and some sunbeds and umbrellas above the beach level.
Italida beach: I would say the most famous one, sandy and fabulous. 20 minutes walk from the town or 10 minutes by boat. There is a beach bar in the previous beach Fanos, as I mentioned above, just 5′ on foot where you can buy drinks or something to eat. Angel’s tip: Arrive early to find a good spot and set up your umbrella or tent.
Pori beach: Incredible long sandy beach, 45 minutes on foot from the town, 7 minutes drive and 30 minutes by boat. There are 2 local taverns from where you can buy something to drink or eat – I loved the one called Kalofeggo. Angel’s tip: Close there you can find the Ksylompatis Caves, very impressive and you can jump from above when it’s not windy, if you are risky!
Pisina: a natural swimming pool where you can feel the magic that nature creates ! You can get there on foot (11-12 minutes) either from Italida or Pori beach and have your camera with you for some cool pics!
Gala beach: 10 minutes walk from Pori beach, a tiny pebbly beach called “milk” because of the white pebbles which are coated by calcium in the water. Access is a bit difficult, not recommended for young kids or people with disabilities.
If you want to be isolated in magical waters go to the other side of the island towards Parianos bay.
Angel’s tip: If you want to explore the incredible unspoiled coastline of Koufonisia, your best choice is to hire a boat. Explore amazing bays, jump into the gorgeous waters and discover super secret sea caves around the island! A unique experience for sure!
DAY TRIP
While you’ll likely be based in Pano Koufonissi, dedicating a day to explore Kato Koufonissi is highly recommended. Here’s how to make the most of your visit to this beautiful island:
- Boat Ride: You can take a boat from the main port of Pano Koufonissi. The trip costs 5 Euros and takes about 15-20 minutes.
- Regular boat services make it easy to plan a day trip without hassle.
Once you arrive in Kato Koufonissi, you have a couple of choices for your beach destination:
1. First Stop:
- Initial Beach: The beach at the first stop is not particularly impressive, but don’t be discouraged.
- Option 1 – Hawaii Beach: Turn right and walk for about 15 minutes to reach the stunning Hawaii Beach.
- Option 2 – Detis Beach: Alternatively, take the path to the left, pass by the local tavern “Venetsanos,” and continue to Detis Beach, which is a favorite for its beauty and tranquility.
2. Second Stop:
- Nero Beach: Known for its clear waters and serene environment.
- Pezoulia Beach: Also nearby, offering another great option for relaxation.
Angel’s tip: Venetsanos is a super local tavern that offers a taste of authentic Greek cuisine. Passing through this tavern on your way to Detis Beach adds a delightful culinary stop to your beach-hopping adventure.
3. DELICIOUS FOOD
Pano Koufonissi is amazing in terms of entertainment due to the plenty food and bars options. You can find delicious local Greek food, fish and meat, fast food, brunch and cocktail bars next to the sea or in town. Below you can find some of the places I recommend:
- For modern cuisine I loved the restaurant called “Laska” and “Mikres Cyclades”. I cannot leave out the restaurant “Kalofeggo” in Pori beach with the delicious beef burger. Angel’s tip: No reservations accepted at Kalofeggo and it is often crowded.
- For meat, the answer is “Mihalios grill house”, big portions – top quality meat.
- For seafood, I recommend “Aneplora” in Parianos bay and “Capetan Nikolas” in town. Both are close to the sea with incredible seafood. Worth mentioning is “Neo Remezzo” in town as well with great views, decent food and good service. Angel’s tip: In Remezzo cream pasta in white sauce is delicious. (but I am person I love the white cream in dishes)
- For delicious dishes to share and Greek food, great choices are “Armira & Pioto” in the town and the tavern in “Foinikas” beach.
- Are you looking for a top bakery with fresh & delicious fravours to eat in the morning or to take with you at the beach? Visit the bakery “Giorgoula”. Everything is SO DELICIOUS! Another option is “Koufonisia bakery” open 24/7 but not as good as Giorgoula.
- For excellent brunch with a wonderful ambiance visit: Tzet, Mylos and Sorokos. Sofia’s Cafe & Kalamia as well.
Angel’s tip: I loved the dish in Tzet with the poached eggs and avocado and their smoothies. - For incredible crepes try the Cafe-Creperie called “Pirata Nero”.
- For TOP souvlaki try the “Souvlaki sti Strofi” Angel’s tip: Some nights the line is huge, be patient.
- For burgers and tacos, visit the CA CHI CA. There is a bar next door as well with the same name.
- For loukoumades (Greek version of donuts), go to Moon Bites.
- For glorious ice-cream you should go to “Phystiki”. Angel’s tip: It is open only in the evening. They have different flavors every day & there is often a queue!
4.GREAT ENTERTAINMENT
My favorite cocktail bars are:
- Sorokos next to the sea. Angel’s tip: Sorokos is perfect for breakfast too where you can relax and swim on the beach below as well.
- Tzet with perfect service and nice vibes.
- Koufohorio that you can party inside as well.
- Mylos with the beautiful windmill. Angel’s tip: In Mylos there is a beautiful boutique store inside the windmill with clothes, jewellery and accessories that is worth your visit .
After the above mentioned bars, you can continue in “Nelipot” for late drinks with excellent Greek music.
5. PICTURESQUE TOWN
Koufonisia boasts a picturesque town, called Chora, that captures the essence of Greek island charm. You can explore iconic white-washed houses, narrow streets, Chora’s lively bar and restaurant scene, boutiques and shops and so much more!
Chora in Koufonisia invites you to immerse yourself in its beauty and charm. Whether you’re capturing the picturesque scenery through your camera lens, sampling delicious local cuisine, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll, Chora promises an unforgettable experience that embodies the essence of Greek island life.
Angel’s tip: no cars are permitted in the town since roads are too small and as I mentioned earlier my recommendation is to stay in the town if you don’t have a car/motorcycle.
6. THE BEST SECRET: LOCALS CHOOSE IT
I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t believe that places frequented by locals in any country are special and worth visiting!
Whether we’re talking about a restaurant, a hotel, a specific place, or an entire island… Speaking for myself, whenever I see many locals gathered somewhere, I strongly feel that there must be something remarkable there that I should try too! This is why booking a room well in advance is essential, as accommodations can be challenging to find.
Believe me, Koufonisia is truly special, wonderful, splendid, and well worth your visit!
