6+1 REASONS TO VISIT CHIOS ISLAND

Tucked away in the northeastern Aegean, just a breath away from the Turkish coast, Chios is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. It’s the 5th-largest Greek island, but still feels untouched – raw, authentic and full of stories.

This island holds a very special place in my heart – not just because of its beauty, but also because I once lived and studied here for 4 unforgettable years. Those years shaped the way I see Greece, travel and life itself. Every time I return, it feels like coming home. It’s hard to explain, but Chios has a soul and once you feel it, you’ll never forget it!!

Unlike the more famous Cycladic islands, Chios hasn’t been overtaken by mass tourism. Instead, you’ll discover raw natural beauty, medieval villages, warm-hearted locals, and a slower rhythm that invites you to truly unwind. From black-pebble beaches and fragrant mastiha groves to soul-soothing food and untouched landscapes, Chios is for travelers who want to experience Greece off the beaten path.

Let’s begin with some basic information….

Where is Chios?

Chios is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea, just across from the Turkish coast (near Cesme and Izmir). It belongs to the North Aegean region and offers a unique blend of East-meets-West culture, layered with history, authenticity, and charm.

How to Get to Chios

By Plane:

  • Direct flights from the capital, Athens take about 40-50 minutes.
  • Sometimes, especially during summer time, there are flights from Thessaloniki or other European cities.

By Ferry

  • From Athens (Piraeus Port): Regular ferries connect Piraeus to Chios Town. The trip takes around 7–9 hours, depending on the stops. A popular option is the overnight ferry – wake up in Chios ready to explore! If you’d like to support this site that I write with so much love for you, you can book your tickets through this link here.

  • From Lavrio to Mesta (Southwest Chios): There are occasional ferries from Lavrio Port (closer to Athens Airport) to Mesta Port in southern Chios. Angel’s Tip: Check the schedule in advance – this route does not run daily, but it’s a great option if you’re staying near Mesta or the mastiha villages.

  • Island Hopping Options: Chios is connected by ferry to nearby islands like Lesvos, Samos, and Ikaria – perfect if you’re planning a multi-island trip.

  • From Turkey (Çeşme): Just a 30-minute ferry ride connects Chios with the Turkish coast.

Is a Car Necessary in Chios?

Absolutely.

Chios is a large and spread-out island. While Chios Town is walkable, most of the island’s best beaches, villages, and hidden gems are only accessible by car. If you want to explore properly – and trust me, you do – having your own or renting a car is essential. Angel’s tip: I rented a great car from an exquisite new company with excellent service called “Chios Explorer Car Rentals “. I truly recommend them! Telephone number is +30 2271 400875.

Otherwise, you can always use DiscoverCars to book a car and compare prices and companies. Click here.

Where to Stay in Chios

Chios Town is located in the center of the island and is where most of the shops, cafés, and main nightlife are found.
It’s not the most picturesque place, but I love staying there – it’s super convenient, especially if you want to explore all parts of the island easily.

Angel’s Tip: If you’re visiting for many days, consider splitting your stay to experience the different vibes of Chios — from seaside villages to mountain towns and medieval fortresses.

Chios Town (Center) – for convenience & nightlife

A great base with everything within walking distance — restaurants, bars, shops, and the port.

Angel’s Tip: I recommend the Royal Pearl Island Chios Hotel & Spa — a stylish new 5-star boutique hotel just minutes from the town center. Modern suites (some with private pools or Jacuzzi), a big elegant pool with bar, great food in Mastihi restaurant, excellent service and a peaceful setting that’s still close to the buzz of town. Check more & book here.

Volissos (North) – for nature & village charm

Perfect if you want to explore the wild northern beaches, hike, or enjoy traditional village life. Quiet, authentic, and surrounded by nature. There are great beaches you can visit close by like Lefkathia, Magemena, Prastia, Agia Markella…

Katarraktis (South-East) – for local seaside vibes

A small fishing village with great seafood and a calm, laid-back feel.

Angel’s Tip: I stayed at Kentos Project and loved it – a simple, affordable stay in a peaceful, local setting. Great base to explore the southern beaches and nearby villages. You can contact them on Instagram too!

Mesta (South-West) – for medieval atmosphere

Stay inside the walls of this preserved medieval village to experience stone alleys, hidden courtyards, and history all around you.

Angel’s Tip: Spending a night here feels like stepping back in time – it’s a completely different side of Chios.

What to Try in Chios – Local Products & Flavors
  • Mastelo Cheese: A soft, semi-hard cow or goat cheese made locally in Chios. Grilled or pan-fried, it becomes golden and delicious!
  • Souma: A traditional local spirit made from distilled figs (not grapes like tsipouro). Strong and fiery, often homemade, and shared with pride — especially at village feasts.
  • Mastiha or Mastic: The island’s most famous product, a rare and aromatic resin from the mastiha trees of Chios. (more explained below). Try it as: Liqueur, Chewing gum, Loukoumi, Ice cream, Skincare products etc

  • Citrus Sweets from Kampos: Try candied citrus peels, citrus spoon sweets (glyka tou koutaliou), or citrus marmalade — many made at the Citrus Estate.
  • Masourakia & Amygdalota : Traditional almond-based sweets, often with rosewater or mastiha — found in patisseries like Moniodis.
  • Chios Beer: A local craft beer made with mastiha-infused variations.

6+1 REASONS TO VISIT CHIOS ISLAND

1. The Home of Mastiha

Mastiha is special because it only grows on the island of Chios – nowhere else in the world. It’s a natural resin, or “sap,” collected from mastiha trees by local farmers using old methods passed down through families. Mastiha has a fresh, pine-like smell and a slightly sweet taste. People use it in many ways – in drinks, sweets, chewing gum, skin care, and even medicine. Beyond its economic importance, mastiha is woven into the island’s cultural identity, inspiring festivals, rituals, and a deep respect for nature.

What to Do:

  • Visit the Mastiha Museum – learn everything about this “liquid gold”. Angel’s tip: Don’t miss it, it is really interesting! Entrance is 8 euros.
  • Explore the Mastihochoria – a cluster of villages where mastiha is cultivated (like Pyrgi, Mesta, Armolia)
  • Taste and try mastiha in liqueurs, cocktails, ice creams, skincare, sweets etc

2. Unspoiled, Crystal-Clear Beaches

Chios is a paradise for beach lovers who crave raw beauty and peace. Think crystal waters, wild landscapes, and no crowds.

Top Beaches to Discover:

  • Salagona – Crystal-clear waters with a small canteen offering umbrellas and sunbeds for €5 per set.
  • Avlonia – A peaceful beach, with crystal-clear waters and beautiful scenery. The beach has sunbeds and a small canteen, but still feels quiet and unspoiled. Great for a swim and then visiting nearby villages like Olympi or Pyrgi.
  • Prastia – A bit remote and only accessible via a rough dirt road, but worth it for the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty. Ideal if you’re up for a little adventure, the only sandy beach in Northwest Chios!

  • Agia Dynami – Calm, pine-fringed shore with serene vibes

  • Trachili – Perfect and pristine, with a sense of isolation. Angel’s tip: Park your car above on the road and walk till the beach.

  • Tigani – Stunning, pebbly, secluded cove. Angel’s tip: You can reach the beach with your car and park there.

  • Elinta – A remote, unorganized beach known for its crystal waters and natural beauty. Surrounded by pine trees, cliffs — and yes, plenty of bees….Angels’ tip: many bees! Bring water, snacks, and your own shade.

  • Agia Fotia – Close to town , pebbly with lively beach bars and easy access. Not something wow.

  • Nagos – A pebbly beach in North Chios with cool waters and shade, not my favorite, but worth a stop if you’re exploring the north.

  • Gyali –Remote and wild – this beach is all about raw natural beauty. Angel’s tip: The dirt road to get there isn’t the best. It’s not organized, so bring everything you need. If you’re after solitude, crystal-clear water, and off-the-map vibes, Gyali delivers.
