Chalki (or Halki) is a small, picturesque island in the Dodecanese, just west of Rhodes. While it’s not as widely known as some of the more famous Greek islands, its unspoiled beauty, charming neoclassical village and serene atmosphere make it a hidden gem for those seeking authenticity and peace. It’s perfect for travelers who want to experience real Greek island life away from the crowds.
Fun fact: Some Greek friends of mine hadn’t even heard of Chalki until I told them!
Where is Chalki Island?
Chalki lies just 6 km off the western coast of Rhodes. It’s one of the smaller and more tranquil islands of the Dodecanese group – ideal for slow travel and relaxation. It is perfect for 2-3 days but the more you can stay, the better!
How to Get to Chalki
- By Ferry from Rhodes: The most common route is via ferry from the port of Kamiros Skala, which takes 40–50 minutes depending on the vessel. You can reach Rhodes island by ferry or plane from Athens and other European cities .
You can book your tickets online and support my site here (thank you!) : Ferryscanner.com
- From Other Islands: There are also occasional connections from nearby Dodecanese islands and even Piraeus (Athens), but they’re less frequent.
- By Private Boat : You can also rent or charter a boat from Rhodes for a more exclusive experience.
Useful information
- Chalki has one main village (Nimborio), which also serves as the port.
- There’s no bus service, and only one taxi ( tel: +30 6944755135).
- A car isn’t necessary – most places can be reached on foot or by boat.
- Season: Best time to visit is May to October.
- Facilities are limited: few ATMs, no gas station, small shops and basic medical services – come prepared!
- Accommodation is limited, so book early, especially in peak months. Try to stay in Nimborio. Angel’s tip: I stayed in Aretanassa hotel at the port and it was incredible.

Beaches in Chalki Island
Halki, a serene island in the Dodecanese, boasts some of Greece’s most enchanting beaches. While many are accessible by foot or car, several secluded gems remain off the beaten path. To explore these hidden spots, consider taking a water taxi from the main port, such as the “Giannis Express,” which offers convenient and affordable trips to remote beaches.
1. Pondamos Beach
The island’s most popular beach, Pondamos features clear, shallow waters and soft sand, making it ideal for families and leisurely swims. It’s also the only sandy beach on the island and is organized with sunbeds and a beach bar for snacks and drinks, I loved it!
2. Ftenagia Beach
A rocky beach with crystal-clear waters, Ftenagia is perfect for snorkeling. Located near Nimborio village, it’s accessible by foot or boat. The beach is organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a taverna serving delicious Greek cuisine.
3. Kania Beach
A small pebbly beach with calm, deep waters, Kania offers a laid-back atmosphere. It’s great for a quiet swim and is accessible by boat taxi or a short walk from Nimborio. A beach bar provides refreshments and light meals.
4. Giali (Yiali) Beach
A secluded, serene beach, Giali is ideal for those who enjoy privacy. Accessible by boat or a hike, it offers a peaceful retreat with stunning natural beauty.
5. Areta Beach
Located on the western side of the island, Areta is wild and unspoiled. You can get there by boat or a challenging hike from Nimborio. The beach is surrounded by steep cliffs and is steeped in legend, believed to be the site of the Cyclops’ cave from Homer’s Odyssey.
6. Trachia Beach
A one-of-a-kind double-sided beach on a narrow strip of land, Trachia offers the unique experience of having the sea on both sides. It’s remote and peaceful, though the seabed may be rocky. Accessible only by boat – not my favorite.
7. Archangelos Beach
Secluded and rocky, Archangelos is great for solitude and rugged natural beauty. Reachable only by boat or a long hike, it offers a true escape into nature.
Water Taxi Services
To reach these remote beaches, consider using water taxis like the “Giannis Express” water taxi service I used. Operating from the main port of Nimborio, it offers round-trip rides to various beaches. You can find many of them at the port.
-
Areta Beach: €20 per person
-
Trachia Beach: €20 per person
-
Giali Beach: €25 per person
-
Kania Beach: €5 per person
