Salzburg lies on both sides of the river Salzach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The old city is on the one side of the river &amp; this is where the majority of all the beautiful sights are &#8211; the castle, the cathedral, the lovely squares (also where the Christmas markets are located), Mozart\u2019s birthplace &amp; many restaurants\/cafes.<\/li>\n<li>Just across the river, it is the New town. A. Mozart otherwise Munich in Germany that I used, is the closest big airport. Other options are Innsbruck Airport (INN), approximately 185 kilometers (115 miles) west of Salzburg and Linz Airport (LNZ), approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) northwest of Salzburg. Vienna is 300 kilometers (186 miles) far but by train or car distance is around 3-4 hours !<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Angel&#8217;s tip: <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I rented a car from Munich Airport (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=angeliki\">had already booked online<\/a>) and selected the car rental company &#8220;Enterprise&#8221; for my vehicle. I was highly pleased with the service, securing a jeep Volvo for 50 euros per day. In Austria, they regularly clear the snow from the roads, and the cars come with winter tires, so there&#8217;s no need to worry about driving in snowy conditions!!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Munich airport was 2 hours drive from Salzburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Duration: <\/strong>Salzburg is a small city that you can easily see in 2 days!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I need a car? <\/strong>For the city of Salzburg, car is not necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accommodation:<\/strong> I loved the old town but new town has easier parking &amp; more options for hotels. Strolling through the narrow streets and squares, you&#8217;ll encounter charming shops, cafes, and historical landmarks like the Cathedral which is impressive with its beautiful facade and interior.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4062 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/explorewithangel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_6376-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explorewithangel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_6376-1.jpg 1134w, https:\/\/explorewithangel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_6376-1-300x533.jpg 300w, https:\/\/explorewithangel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_6376-1-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/explorewithangel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_6376-1-800x1422.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Check out <strong>Salzburg Castle <\/strong>or Fortress Hohensalzburg and enjoy the stunning view from above.\u00a0 The fortress itself is a fascinating historical site with museums and exhibits. You can go up to the castle either on foot by the path starting near the Kapitelplatz or by funicular\u00a0 which is the most popular and convenient way that ascends to the fortress from the Festungsgasse station in the Old Town. The funicular provides a quick and scenic ride up the hill, offering panoramic views of Salzburg. Please note that access to the Castle is not entirely free, as there is an entrance fee to explore certain areas of the fortress, inside ones. However, you can access the castle grounds and enjoy the exterior views without paying anything! <strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Angel&#8217;s<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>tip:<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I paid 17.40 euros for the full access in the castle and the ride with the funicular.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Walking:<\/strong> If you prefer to walk, there&#8217;s a path leading up to the fortress. The path starts near the Kapitelplatz and winds its way up the hill. The Palace is known for its beautiful gardens, grand architecture, and the iconic Mirabell Palace Bridge. In close proximity, you will find the entrance to the funicular, offering a convenient and scenic means to ascend to the castle grounds. It was built in the early 17th century (1613\u20131619) in the early Baroque architectural style. One of the main attractions of Hellbrunn Palace is its trick fountains, designed to surprise and delight visitors. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Angel&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Check before you go as it closes during winter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sazlburg salt mine<\/strong> is famous in the area and very impressive, 15 km far for the city. You can check more details, prices and timings <a href=\"https:\/\/tickets.salzwelten.at\/en\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Local food<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Salzburg, like many cities in Austria, has a rich culinary tradition, and you&#8217;ll find a variety of local dishes to try. Here are some traditional Austrian and Salzburg specialties that you might want to explore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schnitzel<\/li>\n<li>Gulaschsuppe (Goulash Soup)<\/li>\n<li>Kaiserschmarrn dessert<\/li>\n<li>Erd\u00e4pfelsalat (Potato Salad)<\/li>\n<li>Salzburger Nockerl dessert<\/li>\n<li>Mozartkugeln or Mozart chocolate balls. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Angel&#8217;s tip:<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Don&#8217;t miss to visit Caf\u00e9-p\u00e2tisserie F\u00fcrst at the old market. That\u2019s where the original Mozart chocolate was invented and is produced to this day. <\/span><\/span>The original Mozart chocolate is wrapped into blue and silver tinfoil and it is available at F\u00fcrst shops (and F\u00fcrst is the only one that can call their Mozart balls \u201coriginal\u201d.)
