Xanthi is a great base for exploring the western part of Thrace, including the Nestos River, Lake Vistonida and Porto Lagos. Alexandroupoli works perfectly for exploring Evros, the Dadia area and the eastern side of the region. I chose Xanthi and I was driving around all Thrace.<\/p>\n
\n- My recommendation in Xanthi: Z Palace Hotel – good prices, free parking and a great breakfast.<\/li>\n
- Renting\/having a car is highly recommended, especially if you want to explore the natural attractions and smaller villages.<\/li>\n
- Ideal duration for the entire region: 5-7 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

When to Visit\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nThrace is a year-round destination, but your experience can be completely different depending on the season.<\/p>\n
\n- Autumn \u2013 My personal recommendation: I visited at the end of October and absolutely loved it. This is an amazing time if you want to combine the city with the surrounding mountains, forests and waterfalls. Haidou Forest for example was spectacular in its autumn colours and one of the highlights of my entire trip.<\/li>\n
- February \/ March \u2013 For Xanthi Carniva – one of the best in Greece!! If you want to experience Xanthi at its liveliest, visit during the famous Xanthi Carnival, which takes place in the weeks before Orthodox Lent. Expect parades, costumes, music, parties and a completely different atmosphere throughout the city.<\/li>\n
- Spring \u2013 For nature & outdoor activities! Another great choice for exploring the Nestos River, waterfalls and mountain villages, when the surrounding landscapes are green and temperatures are generally comfortable for outdoor activities.<\/li>\n
- Summer \u2013 Combine mountains & sea. Summer works particularly well if you want to combine Xanthi with Porto Lagos, Lake Vistonida, Avdira and the nearby coastline. You can also take advantage of your hotel\u2019s swimming pool after a day of exploring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
What to Eat in Thrace<\/strong><\/p>\nFood is definitely one of the highlights of travelling around Thrace.<\/p>\n

XANTHI & AROUND<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nXanthi was definitely my favourite of the 3 main cities I visited in Thrace. I loved its beautiful Old Town, colourful traditional houses, lively atmosphere and great food and nightlife scene. It\u2019s also an excellent base for exploring some of the most impressive places in the wider region, from the Nestos River and the Pomak villages to waterfalls and spectacular mountain landscapes. I recommend spending 3-4 days here, using Xanthi as your base for both the city and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n

\n- Old Town of Xanthi \u2013 Wander through cobbled streets filled with colourful mansions, traditional houses and caf\u00e9s.<\/li>\n
- Folklore & Historical Museum of Xanthi \u2013 A beautiful mansion where you can learn more about the history and traditions of the city.<\/li>\n
- House of Manos Hadjidakis \u2013 Dedicated to the famous Greek composer who was born in Xanthi.<\/li>\n
- Shadow Theatre Museum \u2013 A small and unusual museum dedicated to the traditional Greek shadow theatre, Karagiozis.<\/li>\n
- Path of Life: Walk along the Path of Life, a beautiful route following the Kosynthos River. It\u2019s an easy way to escape into nature without travelling far from the city.<\/li>\n
- Xanthi Bazaar \u2013 If you\u2019re visiting on Saturday, don\u2019t miss one of the largest open-air markets in Northern Greece.<\/li>\n
- Monasteries & Sunset: For beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere, visit Panagia Archangelotissa Monastery and Kalamou Monastery. I especially recommend heading up around sunset.<\/li>\n

I stayed at Z Palace Hotel & Congress Center and was very happy with my stay. The hotel may feel a little older in some areas, but overall I found it excellent value for money, especially considering that it is a 5-star hotel and you can often find very reasonable rates. One of the highlights for me was the excellent breakfast, with a large variety of options and local products. The hotel also offers free parking, which is extremely convenient if you\u2019re using Xanthi as a base to explore the wider region by car. During the warmer months, there is also an outdoor swimming pool and pool bar, making it a good option for a summer stay. \n- Nestos Gorge: One of the most impressive natural landscapes in Northern Greece. You can hike along sections of the gorge while enjoying incredible views over the river and its famous meanders.<\/li>\n
- Nestos Adventure Activities: For something more adventurous, try rafting, canoeing, kayaking or other outdoor activities around the river. Angel\u2019s tip:<\/strong><\/span> I personally used Riverland for my experience.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Nestos Observation Point: Head up to one of the viewpoints overlooking the Nestos meanders. From above, you can really appreciate the incredible shape of the river as it winds through the landscape.

Haidou Forest + Livaditis Waterfall<\/strong><\/p>\nExplore Haidou Forest, one of the most beautiful forest landscapes in the mountainous region of Xanthi. Known for its impressive centuries-old beech trees, dense vegetation and wild scenery, it\u2019s a fantastic destination for hiking and nature lovers. Head further into the mountains to discover Livaditis Waterfall.<\/p>\n
The waterfall is hidden within the beautiful forest and requires a hike to reach, so wear suitable shoes and allow enough time.<\/p>\n
I visited at the end of October and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking! The forest was covered in incredible autumn colours and it was honestly one of the landscapes that impressed me the most during my trip to Thrace. <\/span><\/p>\nPomak Villages<\/strong><\/p>\nVisiting the Pomak villages of Xanthi feels like taking a cultural journey back in time. Hidden among the mountains of Rodopi, there are around 60 villages and settlements, each preserving elements of the distinctive traditions, architecture and everyday life of the Pomak community.<\/p>\n
During my trip, I visited around 4-5 of them, driving through mountain roads and tiny settlements that most travellers to Greece never get to see. Some of the best-known villages include Echinos, Myki, Glafki,\u00a0 Medousa, Oraio but part of the experience is simply driving through the region and discovering the smaller villages along the way.![\"\"](\"https:\/\/explorewithangel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/page0-2026-09-22T153320.668.jpg\")

While exploring the Pomak villages, make a stop at Thermes, one of the most interesting villages in mountainous Xanthi. The area is famous for its natural thermal springs, with hot mineral water emerging among the mountains. You can even find small outdoor thermal pools, making this a very unique experience – especially during the colder months. Bring your swimsuit if you want to give them a try!<\/p>\n
For me, exploring the Pomak villages wasn\u2019t just another sightseeing stop – it was one of the most interesting cultural experiences in Thrace and a chance to discover a side of Greece that feels completely different from the country\u2019s more familiar destinations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nAngel\u2019s tip<\/strong><\/span>: One of my favourite experiences was eating in Kottani taverna and village, where I had an amazing traditional meal. Agios Nikolaos in Porto Lagos is one of the most photogenic places in Thrace! The small monastery complex sits directly over the water and is connected to the mainland by wooden walkways. RODOPI<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nKOMOTINI + MORE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nKomotini is the capital of the Rodopi region and one of the most multicultural cities in Greece, with an interesting mix of cultures, traditions and influences. To be honest, I wouldn\u2019t consider it one of the most beautiful cities in Greece from an architectural point of view and I personally think a few hours are enough to explore the main sights. However, it\u2019s definitely worth a stop while travelling through Thrace, especially for its multicultural character, lively centre, local food and traditional sweets.<\/p>\n
The city has a fascinating multicultural identity influenced by the different communities that have lived here over the centuries.<\/p>\n

Its waterfront, iconic lighthouse, caf\u00e9s and restaurants give it a relaxed and lively character, especially around sunset. The city itself can easily be explored in a day, but it\u2019s also a great base for discovering the wider Evros region, including the Evros Delta, Soufli and Dadia Forest.<\/p>\n
Alexandroupoli makes an excellent second base for your Thrace road trip.<\/p>\n

Located close to the border between Greece and Turkey, the Evros River forms an impressive wetland before reaching the Thracian Sea. The area is home to a huge variety of birds, including flamingos, herons, pelicans and birds of prey.<\/p>\n

Visit Soufli – Greece\u2019s Silk Town<\/strong><\/p>\nAround an hour from Alexandroupoli, Soufli is one of the most interesting small towns in Thrace and is famous for its centuries-old silk tradition.<\/p>\n
During the 19th century, Soufli became an important centre of silk production, and you can still see beautiful mansions and traditional cocoon houses around town. You can visit one of the town\u2019s silk museums and learn how silk was traditionally produced, walk around the historic town and see its old mansions and cocoon houses, shop for locally produced silk scarves and try traditional Thracian products such as kavourmas, sausages, local pasta, wine and tsipouro.<\/p>\n
Angel\u2019s tip:<\/strong><\/span> You can combine Soufli + Dadia Forest on the same day from Alexandroupoli.<\/span><\/p>\nDidymoteicho<\/strong><\/p>\nAround 1.5 hours from Alexandroupoli, Didymoteicho is one of Thrace\u2019s most historic towns, known for its Byzantine and Ottoman heritage.<\/p>\n
