HALLSTATT: A FAIRYTALE VILLAGE IN AUSTRIA

I embarked on a captivating journey from Salzburg to Hallstatt, a drive of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, and the experience was truly remarkable. I instantly fell in love with Hallstatt, and I highly recommend considering a visit at your earliest convenience. Situated by the picturesque Hallstatt lake in the Austrian Alps, Hallstatt is a charming village renowned for its breathtaking scenery and rich historical heritage.

This picturesque Austrian village, bearing the name of the adjacent lake, owes its existence to the substantial salt deposits nestled within the Hallstatt mountain. The enduring charm of Hallstatt is deeply intertwined with a history steeped in the prosperous salt mining industry.

Closest airport? Hallstatt does not have its own airport, and the nearest major airports are situated in nearby cities. The closest airports to Hallstatt are in Austria:

Salzburg Airport (SZG): approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Hallstatt and Linz Airport (LNZ) approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) northwest of Hallstatt.

Please note that Hallstatt is:

  • 2,30 hrs by train from Salzburg city or 1-1,5 hour by car
  • 3,5-4 hrs by train or car from Vienna, the capital of Austria

Angel’s tip: I rented a car from Munich Airport (having previously been in Salzburg) and selected the car rental company “Enterprise” for my vehicle. I was highly pleased with the service, securing a Volvo SUV for 50 euros per day. In Austria, they regularly clear the snow from the roads, and the cars come with winter tires, so there’s no need to worry about driving in snowy conditions!!

Angel’s tip: There are no actual borders between Germany and Austria, since they are both part of the EU, and no tolls either.

Angel’s tip: There are 4 main parkings: P1/P2/P3/P4. The closest parking to old town is P2 but P3 is also close enough.

It is free for 15 minutes and 4 euros for the first hour. Below you can find the costs for more hrs:
2 hours: 7,00 Euro
3 hours to 4 hours: 9,50 Euro
5 hours to 6 hours: 10,00 Euro
7 hours to 12 hours: 11,00 Euro
13 hours to 24 hours: Dayticket 16,00 Euro

How many days? Hallstatt, though small in size, offers a wealth of attractions that can be explored in a single day. However, for a truly immersive experience and to savor the charm without the crowds, consider dedicating at least 1 night to this enchanting village. By extending your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to leisurely absorb the breathtaking scenery, explore its historic corners, and embrace the tranquil ambiance that defines Hallstatt. This extra time allows for a more unhurried appreciation of the village’s unique beauty and cultural richness.

THINGS TO DO IN HALLSTATT

  • Wander through the charming streets of Hallstatt old city, lined with colorful houses, shops, and cafes.
  • The village center has a small square with some shops and cafes, creating a quaint and charming atmosphere. (Marketsquare) It’s a delightful place to stroll and explore with lovely colorful houses and a beautiful small fountain.
  • Visit the Catholic Parish Church & admire the architecture and interiors of the iconic church in Hallstatt.
  • Visit the Ossuary (place where relics are kept) chapel: The Hallstatt Ossuary Chapel, or Beinhaus, is a place with historical significance related to local burial customs. It is situated near the Hallstatt Catholic Church and features a remarkable collection of painted skulls, many of which date back centuries.  Entrance is 2 euros and it is not allowed to take pics inside .
  • Have a boat ride on the picturesque lake, surrounded by mountains and the charming village.
  • Try traditional Austrian dishes at local restaurants, and don’t miss out on the delightful pastries and desserts.

Take a photo in the below spots:

  • The famous village viewpoint across the lake (Viewpoint Hallstatt in Googlemaps)
  • Mullerstiege. Angel’s tip: be careful if there is snow because the steps can be very slippery.
  • Muhlbachgasee street
  • Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt (Maria am Berg) catholic church

A bit outside the old town :

  • Ascend the Dachstein mountain by cable car and relish the awe-inspiring panorama from the Hallstatt Skywalk Welterbeblick, an elevated observation deck. Accessible either by a one-hour hike or the cable car (round trip for 22€), the experience is unmatched. Angel’s tip: although it’s advisable to skip in case of foggy conditions since you cannot see anything.
  • Embark on a cable car journey to Dachstein mountain and delve into the historic Salt mine, recognized as the world’s oldest. Uncover the region’s storied salt mining heritage and indulge in a spot of salt shopping – an experience I thoroughly enjoyed! Interestingly, the cable car to the Observation Deck serves both attractions, allowing for a seamless combination. Angel’s tip: The Salt mine visit, along with the funicular round trip, cost me 40€. Check when the last admission is, as it closes relatively early in the afternoon. Book in advance your tickets here
  • Have a refreshing drink or a meal at Rudolf’s Tower (Rudolfsturm) situated within the Skywalk observation deck.
  • Discover the wonders of the Dachstein Ice Cave and Mammoth Cave, open from May to October.
  • Explore the 5 Fingers Lookout, an observation deck. Reach the Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn parking lot by circling Lake Hallstatt, and from there, enjoy a 15-minute funicular ride to the summit of Mount Krippenstein for breathtaking views.

Angel’s tip: Check if there are any local events or festivals happening during your visit to experience the cultural richness of Hallstatt. Note that the Hallstatt Christmas market🎄 takes place 1 day every December .

Angel’s tip: Explore the surrounding mountains and lakeside trails for breathtaking views and a closer connection with nature.

Accommodation: I didn’t spend the night in Hallstatt unfortunately but I saw some hotels with good location I may check next time like Heritage hotel, Gasthof Simony- Hallstatt, Seehotel Grüner Baum…
