Paxos (or Paxoi) is a charming and picturesque island in the Ionian Sea, off the coast of Greece and there is no doubt that it is is a hidden gem that will enchant you! It is known for its stunning natural landscapes, including crystal-clear turquoise waters, hidden coves, and lush greenery. Compared to some of the more popular Greek islands, Paxos maintains a tranquil and laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. The island’s small size and limited tourist infrastructure contribute to its peaceful ambiance.
Ionian sea (between Greece & Italy) has 7 main Greek islands and Paxos is the smallest one from these.
- Corfu (Kerkyra)- Known for its rich history, vibrant old town, and lush landscapes.
- Paxos- Famous for its stunning beaches and tranquil atmosphere.
- Lefkada- Known for its beautiful beaches, particularly Porto Katsiki and Egremni.
- Ithaki- Legendary home of Odysseus, featuring picturesque villages and clear waters.
- Kefalonia – The largest of the Ionian Islands, known for its dramatic landscapes and Myrtos Beach.
- Zakynthos – Famous for Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach and its vibrant nightlife.
- Kythira – Although geographically close to the Peloponnese, it is culturally part of the Ionian Islands group. Known for its charming villages and secluded beaches.
There are some much smaller islands too like:
- Antipaxos – Just south of Paxos, known for its pristine beaches and insane clear blue waters.
- Meganisi – Near Lefkada, famous for its secluded beaches and traditional villages.
- Kalamos – East of Lefkada, known for its lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere.
- Kastos – Close to Kalamos, offering serene beaches and a quiet, laid-back vibe.
- Mathraki – One of the Diapontia Islands, north of Corfu, known for its tranquility and beautiful coastline.
- Othonoi- The largest of the Diapontia Islands, north of Corfu, with stunning beaches and hiking trails.
- Erikoussa- Another Diapontia Island, north of Corfu, known for its sandy beaches and relaxed environment.
- Atokos- An uninhabited island between Ithaca and Kastos, popular for yacht excursions and its natural beauty.
HISTORY
According to the legend, the island would be the southernmost tip of Corfu, if the God of the Sea, Poseidon, had not broken it off with his trident when he needed a god-deserving place to live his love with the Nereid Amphitrite. Wow?
ACCESS
There is no airport in the island. Access is mainly by ferry from Igoumenitsa port or Corfu island. You can book your tickets here ! Igoumenitsa is 5 hours drive from Athens city and 3.5 from Thessaloniki. Angel’s tip: There are taxis you can use but ideally rent or have your own car or scooter to explore the island at your own pace!
Daily cruises take place from Corfu island and Parga city as well (on the mainland).
VILLAGES
Paxos has three main villages, each with its own distinct character and charm. These villages are:
- Gaios: Gaios is the main port and capital of Paxos. It is located on the eastern coast of the island and serves as the primary hub for transportation, dining, and entertainment. Gaios is known for its picturesque harbor, colorful waterfront buildings, and bustling atmosphere. Visitors can explore narrow streets lined with shops, cafes, and tavernas, as well as historic landmarks such as the Venetian fortress.
- Longos: Situated on the northeastern coast of Paxos, Longos is a charming fishing village known for its laid-back atmosphere and scenic waterfront. The village is surrounded by lush greenery and offers a tranquil setting for visitors to relax and unwind. Longos is home to a small harbor, traditional tavernas serving fresh seafood, and quaint cafes overlooking the sea.
- Lakka: Located on the northern coast of Paxos, Lakka is a picturesque village nestled in a natural bay surrounded by olive groves and pine forests. Lakka is known for its stunning sandy beach, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant waterfront promenade. The village offers a range of amenities, including tavernas, bars, and shops, as well as opportunities for water sports and boat excursions.
Of course, there are some other smaller villages too like Magazia, Ozias, Kourteika etc
ACCOMMODATION
Island is small and the distance between Gaios, the main port and Lakka village which is on the north side of the island is less than 15 minutes drive. Consequently, wherever you decide to stay is fine! Last time I was there, I chose an AirBnb house in Apergatika village between Longos and Lakka but Gaios, Lakka, Magazia are great options.
BEACHES
Paxos is blessed with numerous beautiful beaches, each offering its own unique charm and atmosphere – mainly pebbly fyi. Here are only some of the most popular beaches to visit on the island.
On the west side:
- Erimitis: Nature shows its power and creates beaches!! In 2008 after a landslide this beach was created in the center of the western side of the island. It is a spectacular pebbly beach, with stunning views, located amongst towering cliffs and overlooking the sunset. Angel’s tip: be prepared when visiting this beach as it is not organized at all. It is accessible by car till one point (dirt road) and then 15 minutes on foot. Otherwise by boat !
- Galazio and other beaches in the western side of Paxos island. Accessible only by boat via an organized tour or by renting your own. (mainly from Gaios port)
Angel’s tip: On the west side of the island, most of the beaches are accessible only by boat! The island is full of small gorgeous caves and beaches around.
Close to Lakka:
- Harami: a small sandy and pebble beach with crystal-clear waters and lush green surroundingswaters, making it ideal for families with children. There are facilities nearby, including restaurants and cafes.

- Monodendri: one of the largest and most popular beaches on Paxos, known for its turquoise waters and pebble shoreline. The beach is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and offers sunbeds, umbrellas, and tavernas serving refreshments.

Close to Gaios:
- Plakes Beach: Located near Gaios, Plakes Beach is a rocky beach with crystal-clear waters. It is popular for snorkeling and has a more rugged and natural appeal.

- Gianas beach: a small but crowded beach very close to Gaios port.
SUNSET
The sunsets in Paxos are particularly beautiful and offer stunning views that attract both locals and tourists. The island’s western coast though is the best, with its dramatic cliffs and clear horizons! IT provides some of the best vantage points for sunset watching. In my opinion, the best sunset you can have in Paxos Greek island is undoubtedly in Erimitis beach, one of the best I ever had in my life! Angel’s tip: Erimitis Bar & Restaurant above the beach is stunning too!
FOOD
Paxos offers visitors an authentic taste of Greek island life, with traditional architecture, local tavernas serving delicious Greek cuisine, and warm hospitality from the islanders. Below some restaurants I tried and I recommend:
- Dolos in Kourteika village with relaxed atmosphere in a great location with hospitable people.
- Paxoimadi in Lakka, a perfect restaurant with delicious food.
- Bournaos in Magazia village, the meeting point at the center of the island where locals and tourists stop for a Greek coffee, a tsipouro or to grab a bite with local dishes.
- Erimitis restaurant in Paxos island. Located on the West coast of Paxos where you can watch the sunset into the water and enjoy the stunning cliffs of Erimitis while enjoying dinner in the restaurant. Angel’s tip: Reservation is required.
- Carnayo Gold Lounge Café on a premium waterfront location on Mongonissi bay. You can visit for only cocktails too!
- Libretto in Gaios port and Averto in Magazia village for delicious brunch and coffee in a beautiful yard with great atmosphere! It is open all day so it is great for cocktails or dinner too!.
- Capriccio in Gaios village for ice cream/ waffle / crepe and not only!
- O Fournos tou Louka as a local good bakery!
Other restaurants I was recommended my locals: Vasilis fish restaurant in Longos with elegant presentation, Grandfather’s Hanger and O Elias for souvlaki in Magazia village, Lakkaki restaurant in Lakka, Thymari Restaurant in Bogdanatika village.
MUST DO
One of the best ways to explore Paxos is by boat. And an excursion in Antipaxos island and the western side of Paxos is a must! You can rent a boat or join a guided excursion to discover hidden beaches, sea caves, and remote coastal spots around the island. Boat trips also offer opportunities for snorkeling and swimming in the clear waters.
Angel’s tip: I had an amazing day with so much laugh and fun on a guided excursion that was AWESOME! The name of the company is Paxos Classic cruises based in Gaios and captain is Giannis with its “Agios Sevastianos” boat. A local that loves to show you Paxos on his own lovely way and I cannot recommend him enough!
Antipaxos island is known for its stunning sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Visitors can spend a day exploring Antipaxos, swimming in the crystal-clear sea, and soaking up the sun on the pristine beaches. It is a common excursion either from Paxos island, Corfu island, Parga in the mainland opposite!
Main beaches: Vrika which is organized with sunbeds, umbrellas & a restaurant and unspoiled Voutoumi.
Access through Paxos island:
•you can take a water taxi 15 minutes from Gaios port
•you can join an organized tour from Gaios or Lakka port, as I did.
•you can rent your own boat and discover the island!
