SERIFOS: THE ISLAND WITH THE 72 BEACHES

Serifos is in the Cyclades island complex,  a wonderful colorful island well known for the stunning beaches still considered one of the lesser known Greek islands. Before my trip there, I had heard many rumors that Serifos has wonderful beaches with crystal clear waters and lovely town but not the best food possible. Are the rumors true? Yes!

Let’s talk a bit more about this beautiful Cycladic island that I really recommend!

ACCESS TO THE ISLAND

There is no airport on the island. Access is by ferry from Piraeus port, 2 to 5 hours depending on the ferry company you will choose. The faster it is, the more expensive it gets usually. Angel’s tip: There are several websites  to book ferry tickets in Greece.Use below link and support my blog by using it: Ferryscanner.com

HOW MANY DAYS?

Many visit Serifos for just a weekend but I totally recommend more days since the island has many beaches to discover. Ideally stay at least 4 days like I did. Angel’s tip: Serifos’s location is convenient for island hopping as well! Some islands close by are: Sifnos, Kythnos, Tzia, Kimolos, Milos.

ACCOMMODATION

Choose your accommodation in Hora (the main town of Serifos which is the administrative capital as well) or Livadi (port) where the nightlife and restaurants are. Hora and Livadi have 10-15 minutes drive distance between them and you can find parking in both of them – not easy, though, during high season.

Last time, I chose to stay in “Hora” which is perched on top of a hill, amphitheatrically built, offering an amazing view to the Aegean sea. I think it was perfect for me and my friend as we didn’t need to drive at night after being out for drinks!

Angel’s tip:  A wonderful hotel I recommend with exquisite service and the cleanest rooms you can meet are the “Nautilus serifos” in Livadakia.

MEAN OF TRANSPORT

There are taxis and a bus connecting the town with the port and the beaches but if you can have a car with you, I totally recommend it. Car, in my opinion, is absolutely necessary to move around the port & Hora and discover the so many wonderful beaches the island has. Bring one from Athens or rent on the island. Road infrustructure is good!

BEACHES

The island has 72 beaches, the most famous & many of which I visited, are:

  • Lia, Agios Sostis, Psili Ammos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Yialos on the East. Angel’s tip: In Agios Sostis, you can walk a bit to reach the beautiful white church on the side of the beach where the view is beautiful like in the picture below.

  • Kalo Ambeli, Vagia, Ganema, Koutalas, Malliadiko, Mega Livadi on the West.
  • On the North side of the island (but not commonly visited beaches due to the strong winds),  you can find Sikamia, Karavas (an hour walk to reach or by boat) and secluded Avessalos. Skala is another sandy beach accessible with a 20 minutes trail from Sikamia beach (on the right as see the sea) – usually protected from the winds!

Angel’s tip: The majority are not organized so be prepared with umbrellas and snacks/water etc. Check my highlight on Instagram for more pics.

THE TOWN

“Hora” in so beautiful, built amphitheatrically on top of a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. Don’t miss to stroll around Serifos town(Hora) day and night. Pano Piazza (square) is my favorite spot and great for breakfast and drinks/sweets at night as well.

-Don’t miss the view from the castle on the top of Hora. Best time during sunset for the colors of the sky but it is crowded. I went morning hours and it was empty.

-Have a breakfast in “Stou Stratou” cafe/restaurant in Pano Piazza in Hora.

-Try Loukoumades in Hora (open till late at night) in “oh_my_serifos” . So delicious!

THE PORT

Livadi is the main port of the island where the ferry drops you off.

But it is famous as well for the many restaurants and cafeterias you can find. Walk at the port at night for dinner or for a coffee & breakfast during the day.

EXPERIENCES

  • A wonderful thing you can do during sunset time is a visit in Chrysoloras winery. You can have wine tasting with glorious views, an interesting tour in their winery (call them to be informed about the timings) and an excuisite sunset.  Angel’s tip: Not the easiest road to arrive but the stunning sky colors are definitely worth it.

-Visit the iron mines in Mega Livadi. The history of Serifos is linked from the ancient times to the mines that exist on the island, which flourished & gave prosperity to the residents.

-Enjoy the view from the Skopiani Church close to Platys Gialos beach and the village of Kentarchos.

FOOD

The food in Serifos is not the best I have tried in a Greek island. It was ok! You can find though many traditional dishes like fava and try “marathos” as ingredient in fennel-based dishes like fried marathos balls or local marathos pies. Sun-dried tomatoes, Revithada (chickpea stew with rosemary) and Skepastaria (chickpea soup cooked in a clay pot) are local and famous as well.

Some restaurants I tried or they were recommended by locas:

  • I loved “Stou stratou” in Hora (for breakfast it was great too!!).
  • “Lepi-Lepi” in Livadi
  • “Metalleio” in Livadi
  • “Karavidaki” in Livadi
  • “Takis” in Livadi
  • “Mpakakaki” in Livadi area too

Some other options:

  • “Marathoriza” in Chora
  • “Plakies” in Chora
  • “Ydrolithos” in Port
  • “Aloni”
  • “Manolis” in Psilli Ammos

NIGHTLIFE

The nightlife is split between the town and the port.

  • You can have some nice drinks in the cafes/bars in Pano Piazza while you are sitting at the various tables they have allover the square
  • Gaidaros in Hora’s one of the most famous bars open till late with nice cocktails
  • Vatraxos in Hora has nice vibes and ambiance
  • Yacht club in Livadi port.
