If you’re looking for one of Greece’s most unique islands, Nisyros should definitely be on your list!! Located in the Dodecanese island group in the southeastern Aegean Sea, this small volcanic island offers an experience unlike anywhere else in Greece.
Whitewashed villages, dramatic volcanic landscapes, authentic local food, peaceful beaches and one of Europe’s most accessible active volcanic craters make Nisyros the perfect destination for travelers looking for something beyond the typical Greek island holiday.
Where is Nisyros?
Nisyros is a small island in the Dodecanese island group, situated between Kos and Tilos in the southeastern Aegean Sea.
The island is internationally known for its volcano, one of Greece’s youngest active volcanoes, which has shaped both the island’s landscape and its history.
How to Get to Nisyros
There are no direct flights from Athens to Nisyros, as there is no airport on the island but reaching the island is very easy.
- Option 1: Take a direct ferry from Piraeus Port to Nisyros.
- Option 2 (the option I chose) : Fly from Athens to Kos, take a taxi for 10 minutes (13-15 euros) from Kos Airport to Kardamena port, then take the ferry from Kardamena to Nisyros (about 50 minutes). Alternatively, ferries also depart from Kos Town.
If you’re already staying on Kos, there are also plenty of organized day trips to Nisyros.
How Many Days Do You Need?
Although many visitors come on a day trip from Kos, I could easily stay for 10 days !! I highly recommend spending 2-3 days on the island.
This gives you enough time to:
- explore the villages
- visit the volcano without rushing
- enjoy the beaches
- watch the sunset
- discover the local food
- experience the island once the day-trippers leave.
The atmosphere changes completely in the afternoon and evening. Sunset from Mandraki is stunning!!!

Although Nisyros is a relatively small island, renting a car is highly recommended and I’d even say it’s essential if you want to explore the island properly. Most of the island’s highlights, including the volcano, picturesque villages, hidden beaches and panoramic viewpoints, are spread across the island, while public transportation is limited and no taxis.
Angel’s tip: I rented my car from “Manos K” car rentals and the whole experience was smooth, easy and reliable. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore Nisyros at your own pace and make the most of your visit.

- Other Villages like Emporios, Nikia or Pali if you’re looking for a much quieter stay & peaceful atmosphere.
Angel’s tip: I chose Mandraki and booked a house with an incredible view called Poseidon house.

Renting a car, scooter or ATV is highly recommended. Although Nisyros is relatively small, having your own vehicle makes it much easier to explore the volcano, beaches, mountain villages and viewpoints.
Best Things to Do in Nisyros
1. Walk inside Stefanos Crater
This is the highlight of every visit. Stefanos Crater is one of the largest and best-preserved hydrothermal craters in the world that visitors can actually walk inside.
You’ll experience:
- steaming fumaroles
- sulfur vent
- volcanic ground beneath your feet
- an unforgettable lunar-like landscape
Opening hours: approximately 09:00–19:00 (seasonal)
Entrance fee: €5
Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid both the heat and the crowds.
Tips
- Wear closed shoes.
- Bring water (there is a canteen though!), sunscreen and a hat.
- Stay on the marked paths.
- The sulfur smell is completely normal.
- Day trips from Kos with crowds arrive at the volcano around 11 am.
2. Visit Panagia Spiliani Monastery
Panagia Spiliani sits above Mandraki and offers one of the island’s best panoramic views. Besides the beautiful monastery, you’ll also discover a small cave chapel hidden beneath it.
3. Explore Mandraki village
The island’s capital is full of narrow alleys, traditional whitewashed houses, cafés and small shops. Take your time to wander without a map – it’s one of those villages where getting lost is part of the experience.
Things to Do in Mandraki
* Wander through the beautiful whitewashed alleys.
* Browse the charming local shops selling handmade products and souvenirs.
* Watch one of the island’s most beautiful sunsets.
* Visit Palaiokastro, one of the best-preserved ancient fortifications in the Aegean, offering panoramic views over Mandraki and the sea.
* Explore the Archaeological Museum of Nisyros to discover the island’s history through ancient artifacts dating from prehistoric to Byzantine times.
4. Wander through Emporios village
Once one of the island’s largest villages, Emporios is now a peaceful mountain village with incredible volcano views, traditional architecture and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Don’t miss the natural geothermal cave, often called the island’s “natural sauna.”
5. Visit Nikia village
Nikia is probably my favorite village on the island. Its beautiful central square (Porta square) is considered one of the most picturesque in Greece, while the views over the volcanic caldera are simply breathtaking.
6. Enjoy the breathtaking view from Profitis Ilias Chapel
One of my absolute favorite viewpoints. Profitis Ilias Chapel offers panoramic views over the volcano on one side and the endless blue Aegean Sea on the other. You can reach it by car or a short walk from the village.
7. Visit the Volcanological Museum in Nikia
Located in Nikia, the Volcanological Museum of Nisyros explains how the volcano formed and why Nisyros remains volcanically active today. It’s definitely worth visiting before heading to the crater.
8. Watch the Sunset
My favorite place for sunset is Mandraki, although you’ll find beautiful viewpoints all around the island.
9. Go Hiking
Nisyros has several scenic hiking trails connecting villages, volcanic landscapes and viewpoints. If you enjoy walking, this is one of the best ways to experience the island.

Best Beaches
Don’t expect endless sandy beaches. Instead, Nisyros offers volcanic beaches with crystal-clear water.
My favorites are:
Pachia Ammos: The island’s most famous beach, with crystal-clear waters, volcanic sand mixed with small pebbles and a wild, unspoiled setting. My favorite beach with a short walk required (10-15 minutes) after you park your car. Angel’s tip: Locals told me that during August, beach is famous for free camping and full of tents!
Lies Beach: A peaceful pebble beach with beautiful waters, ideal if you’re looking for a quiet swim away from the crowds.
Pali Beach: A family-friendly shallow beach next to the village of Pali, with calm waters, tavernas, sand and easy access.
Chochlaki Beach: Mandraki’s volcanic pebble beach, famous for its smooth black pebbles and beautiful sunset views.
Where to Eat
Geusea – The island’s top choice for seafood, serving exceptionally fresh fish and creative Mediterranean dishes right by the sea.
Oxos – A traditional kafeneio, perfect for authentic local dishes, meze and a relaxed atmosphere. Loved it!
Captain’s House – Great choice for classic Greek cuisine in Mandraki.
Balkoni – One of the best places to eat in Emporios, combining delicious Greek food with spectacular volcano views.
Black Ice – My favorite spot for delicious crêpes and cold sandwiches.
Oasis Restaurant – A great choice for traditional Greek meze and a relaxed local atmosphere.

Useful Travel Tips
- Best months to visit: May, June and September offer the best combination of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
- What to pack: Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and swimwear – you’ll likely visit both the volcano and the beach on the same day.
- Cash or card? All hotels and restaurants accept cards, but it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller cafes and local shops.
- Car rental: Renting a car is the best way to explore the island, as many of the most beautiful viewpoints, beaches, and villages are spread across Nisyros.
- Volcano visit: Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and the day-trip crowds arriving from Kos.

The best months are May through September.
May & June: ideal weather, fewer crowds and lush landscapes.
July & August: warm sea, lively atmosphere and longer days.
September: warm water with a much quieter atmosphere.
Nisyros surprised me in the best possible way.
It’s one of those destinations that combines spectacular nature, authentic villages, incredible food and genuine Greek island charm without the crowds you’ll find elsewhere!!
Whether you come for the volcano, the picturesque villages or simply to slow down for a few days, Nisyros is easily one of Greece’s most underrated islands and one I would happily return to again and again…
