ΚΟΡΙΝΘΙΑ: ΟΠΟΥ ΑΡΧΙΖΕΙ Η ΠΕΛΟΠΟΝΝΗΣΟΣ

Just an hour from Athens, Corinthia is one of the most diverse regions of the Peloponnese, combining ancient history, beautiful beaches, picturesque mountain villages, wineries and incredible natural landscapes.

Most travelers know Corinthia for its famous Corinth Canal, but there’s so much more to discover! Whether you’re planning a day trip from Athens, a relaxing weekend by the sea or a mountain escape, this guide covers some of the best places to visit and experiences not to miss in Corinthia.

WHERE IS CORINTHIA AND HOW TO GET THERE?

Αρχικά, η Πελοπόννησος χωρίζεται σε 7 κύριες περιοχές:

Corinthia is located in the northeastern Peloponnese, connecting mainland Greece with the Peloponnese through the famous Isthmus of Corinth. The region is bordered by two gulfs: the Corinthian Gulf to the north and the Saronic Gulf to the east.

  •  By car: Corinth is approximately 1 hour from Athens, depending on traffic.
  •  By train: The suburban railway connects Athens with Corinth and Kiato.
  •  By bus: KTEL buses also connect Athens with Corinth.

Angel’s tip: Renting a car is the best way to explore Corinthia, especially if you want to visit archaeological sites, beaches, wineries and mountain villages in one trip.

BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN CORINTHIA

 1. Ancient Corinth – Step Back in Time

Ancient Corinth was once one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities in ancient Greece, thanks to its strategic location between two seas. Today, you can explore its fascinating archaeological site and discover the remains of temples, fountains, public buildings and the ancient marketplace. The highlight is the impressive Temple of Apollo, built in the 6th century BC. Of its original 38 columns, seven are still standing today!

Don’t miss the Archaeological Museum, where you can learn more about the city’s history.

  •  Around 10 km from modern Corinth.
  •  Allow approximately 1-1.5 hours.
  • 15 euros entrance

Angel’s tip: Combine Ancient Corinth with Acrocorinth Castle, located just a short drive away.

2. Acrocorinth Castle – Enjoy Breathtaking Views

Standing approximately 575 meters above sea level, Acrocorinth is one of the most impressive historic fortresses in Greece. Throughout the centuries, it was controlled by different civilizations, including the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Ottomans.

Today, visitors can walk through its massive gates, explore historic ruins and admire spectacular panoramic views of the Corinthian Gulf and the surrounding countryside.

  • Allow 1-2 hours to explore.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are steep and rocky.
  • Bring water, especially during summer.
  • Free entrance

Συμβουλή του Angel: Visit early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. The views from the upper sections are absolutely worth the climb!

3. Corinth Canal – One of Greece’s Most Famous Landmarks

One of the most impressive landmarks in Corinthia is the Corinth Canal, a narrow, man-made waterway connecting the Corinthian Gulf with the Saronic Gulf. Stretching approximately 6.3 km, it separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece. But did you know there are several places to admire the canal? Here are 3 of the most iconic spots worth visiting!

  • Old Isthmus Bridge – The Classic Viewpoint: This is the most famous viewpoint of the Corinth Canal and the perfect place to admire its impressive steep rock walls from above. It has also a tourist center and it is also where you can experience bungee jumping over the Corinth Canal, an exciting activity for adventure lovers!  Location: Isthmus of Corinth
  • Isthmia Submersible Bridge : Located at the eastern entrance of the canal, on the Saronic Gulf side, this is one of the most unusual bridges in Greece! Unlike traditional bridges that open or lift, this one actually sinks underwater to allow ships to pass. If you’re lucky, you might witness the whole process! Location: Isthmia
  • Poseidonia Submersible Bridge : At the western entrance of the canal, on the Corinthian Gulf side, you’ll find another submersible bridge. Just like the one in Isthmia, it sinks below the water when ships need to pass. It’s a great place to see the canal from sea level rather than from above. Location: Poseidonia, near Loutraki

Angel’s tip: One of the most memorable ways to experience the Corinth Canal is by taking a boat cruise through it! Sailing between the towering rock walls gives you a completely different perspective of this impressive engineering achievement.

Please note:

✓ The Old Isthmus Bridge is the best choice for panoramic photos and the place to do bungee jumping.

✓ Visit one of the submersible bridges if you want to see how they work. Ship crossings are not guaranteed though during your visit.

✓ Allow extra time if you want to explore more than one viewpoint.

✓ The canal has experienced seasonal closures due to restoration works in recent years. (from November to April) Check the latest operating dates and cruise availability before visiting.

4.Explore Ancient Isthmia & Watch a Bridge Disappear Underwater!

Just a short drive from the Corinth Canal, Isthmia is an area full of history!

In ancient times, it hosted the Isthmian Games, one of the four major Panhellenic athletic festivals, held in honour of Poseidon. Today, you can explore the archaeological site, including the remains of the Temple of Poseidon, and visit the Archaeological Museum of Isthmia.

But there’s something else you shouldn’t miss! –> Isthmia Submersible Bridge: Head to the eastern entrance of the Corinth Canal to see one of Greece’s most unusual bridges! Instead of lifting, the bridge actually sinks underwater to allow ships to pass. If you’re lucky, you might witness it in action!

Where to eat: For fresh fish and seafood by the sea, check out Kavos Restaurant, a well-known seafood restaurant in Isthmia. Keep in mind that it’s on the expensive side compared to a typical Greek taverna.

Συμβουλές του Angel:

  • Combine the archaeological site with a visit to the submersible bridge.
  • Ships crossings don’t follow a fixed schedule, so you may need to wait to see the bridge sink.
  • Book a table at Kavos in advance, especially on weekends.

The ruins are surrounded by dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters, making this one of the most photogenic archaeological sites in the region. Not to be confused with Lake Vouliagmeni near Athens! Its calm waters and picturesque surroundings make it an excellent place to relax, swim or enjoy a meal at a nearby taverna. It’s especially beautiful during the warmer months.

Some wineries worth checking out: Gaia Wines, Palivou Estate, Bairaktaris Winery, Lantides Winery, Semeli Estate, Domaine Spiropoulos, Papaioannou Estate, Gofas Family Winery, Lafazanis Winery and Domaine Nikolaou. • After exploring the area, stop for a traditional Greek meal! Restaurants to check out: Danaos & Anastasis, 17 Choria and Sofos.

Συμβουλές του Angel:

✓ Nemea is perfect for a day trip from Athens or as part of a Corinthia road trip. I combined it with Mykines too in Argolida!

✓ Combine Ancient Nemea with a winery visit and a traditional Greek lunch.

✓ September is a particularly interesting time to visit, during the grape harvest and the annual Great Days of Nemea wine festival.

If you’re staying near Ancient Corinth and prefer a shorter detour, you can also look for wineries closer to the city, such as Giannikos Winery.

9. Xylokastro – Relax by the Sea & Explore Pefkias Forest

Xylokastro is a popular seaside destination on the Corinthian Gulf, known for its beaches and beautiful natural surroundings. One of its highlights is Pefkias Forest, a coastal pine forest where you can enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by greenery, just steps away from the sea. The town is a lovely choice for a relaxing summer getaway, with restaurants, cafés and seaside accommodation.
