ΤΑΞΙΔΙΩΤΙΚΟΣ ΟΔΗΓΟΣ ΦΛΩΡΙΝΑΣ: ΤΑ ΚΑΛΥΤΕΡΑ ΠΡΑΓΜΑΤΑ ΝΑ ΚΑΝΕΤΕ

Βρίσκεται στη βορειοδυτική Ελλάδα, κοντά στα σύνορα με τη Βόρεια Μακεδονία και την Αλβανία, η Φλώρινα είναι ένας από εκείνους τους προορισμούς στην Ελλάδα που εξακολουθούν να φαίνονται σχετικά ανεξερεύνητοι. Και κατά τη γνώμη μου, αξίζει πολύ περισσότερη προσοχή!…

Surrounded by mountains, lakes, traditional villages and some of Northern Greece’s most beautiful natural landscapes, Florina is a destination you can visit both in winter and summer. I chose to stay in Florina city and explore the wider region by car – something I definitely recommend if you want to discover everything this area has to offer.

From skiing and wineries to Prespa Lakes, Nymfaio and ARCTUROS, here are the best things to do in Florina and around.

Explore Florina City

• Start your trip by exploring Florina itself. One of the most characteristic parts of the city is the Sakoulevas River, which runs through Florina and is lined with beautiful old buildings, cafés and restaurants. Walk along the river, explore the city center and enjoy Florina’s relaxed atmosphere.nThe city is particularly atmospheric in winter, when temperatures can drop considerably and snow is common in the surrounding mountains. Angel’s tip: Florina is also a convenient base because you can stay in the city while taking day trips throughout the region.
• Try Florina’s Famous Peppers. The region is famous for Florina red peppers, one of its best-known local products. One of my favorite ways to eat them is stuffed with feta cheese and baked in the oven.  Also look out for local cheeses, meat dishes, pies and traditional starters.
• Where to Eat in Florina? Food was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. Don’t miss Aposperitis and Koukoutsi in Florina city and Thomas in Sklithro village. Angel’s tip: You can combine Thomas restaurant with your road trip around Nymfaio and the surrounding villages.

Visit Nymfaio

One of the places you absolutely shouldn’t miss is Nymfaio.

Built at an altitude of around 1,350 meters, this traditional mountain village is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Northern Greece. Expect stone mansions, cobbled streets, mountain scenery and dense forests. Simply walking through Nymfaio is an experience in itself.

Stop for coffee or food, wander through the village and combine your visit with nearby ARCTUROS. Nymfaio is particularly beautiful during autumn and winter, but it is worth visiting throughout the year.

Visit ARCTUROS

One of the most interesting experiences in the Florina region is visiting ARCTUROS, a Greek environmental organization dedicated to wildlife conservation. Its facilities in the wider Nymfaio and Agrapidies area focus on the protection and care of animals including brown bears and wolves.

The animals housed here are not part of a traditional zoo experience. Many cannot be released back into the wild and are cared for in protected environments.

• Opening periods and access to the different facilities can vary according to the season, so always check before travelling.
• Indicative entrance: Adults €10 | Children 5–17 €6 | Under 5 free.

Discover Prespa Lakes

If there is one day trip I wouldn’t skip while visiting Florina, it is Prespa. The Prespa basin is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Northern Greece. The wider lake system extends across Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, creating a unique cross-border ecosystem. Explore the villages around the lakes and definitely visit Psarades, one of the most characteristic settlements in the area.

• Take a Boat Trip from Psarades: If you visit during the warmer months, take a boat trip from Psarades. It is one of the best ways to experience the lake landscape and discover places that are difficult to reach from land.
• Agios Achilleios: Another beautiful stop is the small island of Agios Achilleios, connected to the mainland by a floating pedestrian bridge. Walk across and explore the ruins of the Basilica of Agios Achilleios while enjoying the peaceful lake scenery.
• Don’t leave without trying the famous Prespa beans. The region is particularly known for its Gigantes, the large beans that are one of Prespa’s signature products.

Visit the Wineries of Amyntaio

Amyntaio is one of Greece’s most important wine-producing regions and is particularly famous for Xinomavro, as well as excellent sparkling and rosé wines.

Some wineries worth visiting include:

• Alpha Estate – One of the best-known wineries in Northern Greece, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. You can visit the estate for a tour and wine tasting.
• Kir-Yianni Amyndeon – Located in Agios Panteleimonas, close to Lake Vegoritida. Its tasting room overlooks the vineyards and lake, making it a lovely stop to combine with exploring the area.
• Ktima Karanika – Particularly known for its traditional-method sparkling wines, produced mainly from Xinomavro.
• Domaine Dimopoulos – A smaller winery in Xino Nero, ideal if you’re looking for a more intimate local wine experience.
• Amyntaio Cooperative Winery – A great place to discover the long winemaking tradition of the region.

Angel’s tip: If you only have time for two, Alpha Estate and Kir-Yianni make a great combination and can easily be included in a day exploring Amyntaio, Agios Panteleimonas and Lake Vegoritida.

Skiing Around Florina

Florina is also an excellent base for a winter trip, this was the main reason that I visited it. Depending on how far you want to drive, you have several ski options in the wider region.

• Vigla-Pisoderi: This is the closest major ski center to Florina and the most convenient choice if you’re staying in the city. Its location also makes it possible to combine skiing with a longer trip around Prespa.
• Vitsi: Another option in the wider Western Macedonia region is the ski center on Mount Vitsi, towards Kastoria.
• Kaimaktsalan: You can also head towards Kaimaktsalan Ski Center on Mount Voras, although this is farther away and works better as a separate day trip. You can read more on my relevant blog post. – ΚΑΝΤΕ ΚΛΙΚ ΕΔΩ.

Always check snow conditions, lift operations and road conditions before travelling to any Greek ski center.

Explore More Villages Around Florina

Don’t limit your trip to Florina city. Part of the beauty of this region is simply driving through the countryside and discovering its smaller villages.

Besides Nymfaio, consider exploring Sklithro, Lechovo, Agios Panteleimon and the villages around Prespa depending on your route. The landscapes change dramatically between seasons, which is one of the reasons I think Florina works both as a winter and warmer-weather destination.

Day Trip to Edessa

If you have additional time, you can also visit Edessa.

Known as the “City of Water,” Edessa is famous for its impressive waterfalls and lush green scenery. The highlight is Karanos Waterfall, where the water drops around 70 metres right next to the city centre.

Take a walk through the Waterfalls Park, follow the path behind the waterfall and explore the charming old Varosi district nearby.

Edessa makes an easy stop when exploring Amyntaio, Lake Vegoritida and Palaio Agios Athanasios.

Day Trip to Kastoria

Another option is Kastoria, around an hour’s drive from Florina. Built around beautiful Lake Orestiada, Kastoria is worth much more than just a quick stop if you have enough time. Walk along the lake, explore the traditional neighborhoods of Doltso and Apozari, visit its Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches and enjoy the waterfront. If your schedule allows, I would personally give Kastoria at least a full day.

Lake Vegoritida

You can also add Lake Vegoritida to your itinerary, particularly if you’re heading towards Amyntaio. It is one of Greece’s largest natural lakes and can easily be combined with Agios Panteleimon and a winery visit.

A great route is: Florina → Amyntaio → Alpha Estate → Agios Panteleimon → Lake Vegoritida

How Many Days Do You Need in Florina?

For Florina city alone, you don’t need many days. But that’s not really the point of travelling here. I would recommend 3-4 nights minimum if you want to use Florina as your base and explore the surrounding region. With 4-5 days, you can create a much more complete road trip.

Suggested 4-Day Florina Itinerary

Day 1: Florina city → Sakoulevas River → local food & drinks

Day 2: Nymfaio → ARCTUROS → Sklithro → dinner at Thomas

Day 3: Prespa Lakes → Agios Achilleios → Psarades → boat trip if in season

Day 4: Amyntaio → Alpha Estate → Agios Panteleimon → Lake Vegoritida

Visiting in winter? Add a ski day at Vigla–Pisoderi.

If you have additional days, continue towards Kastoria, Edessa or Kaimaktsalan.

 When Is the Best Time to Visit the area?

One of the things I like most about Florina is that the experience changes completely depending on the season.

• Winter: Choose winter for snow, skiing, cozy mountain villages and a completely different side of Greece. Florina is one of the coldest cities in the country, so come prepared!
• Spring: A beautiful period for road trips, nature and exploring the lakes and villages with fewer visitors.
• Summer: Summer is ideal for Prespa, hiking, boat trips and escaping some of the intense heat found elsewhere in Greece.
• Autumn: Possibly one of the most beautiful seasons for Nymfaio and the surrounding forests, thanks to the autumn colors.
