THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO MILOS, GREECE

Milos is one of the most unique islands in Greece in my opinion, packed with insane volcanic landscapes, charming villages, crystal-clear waters and amazing food & drink spots. Every corner of the island feels different – from lunar beaches to colorful fishing houses and dramatic cliffs!

How Many Days to Stay in Milos

Milos is one of the most diverse islands in the Cyclades, offering stunning beaches, charming fishing villages, unique volcanic landscapes and great food!!  To fully experience the island, I recommend staying at least 4-5 days. This will give you enough time to visit the island’s famous beaches, explore traditional villages, take a boat trip to Kleftiko and enjoy a more relaxed pace!

If you love beaches and photography, you could easily spend a week in Milos.

Access to Milos

Milos is well connected, especially during the summer season.

By ferry from Athens (Piraeus Port): The most common way to reach the island. Travel time varies from approximately 2.5 to 7 hours, depending on whether you choose a high-speed or conventional ferry. You can book your tickets and support my site on this link.

By flight: Milos has a small national airport with direct flights from Athens, making it the fastest option (around 40 minutes).

Island hopping: Milos is also well connected to nearby Cycladic islands such as Kimolos, Sifnos, Serifos and Kythnos, making it a perfect stop for island-hopping trips!

Car is necessary?

Car is highly recommended as many beaches and spots are remote and not easily accessible by public transport. You can book online and support my blog on this link here.

Best Time to Visit

May – June for perfect weather, fewer crowds. July – August: peak season, lively but busy and September – early October: warm sea, more peaceful but some restaurants close for the season.

Useful information

Accommodation in Milos

Milos offers a wide range of accommodation options depending on the experience you’re looking for.

  • Plaka – Perfect if you want charm, sunset views and a more traditional, romantic Cycladic atmosphere with boutique stays and cave-style rooms nearby!
  • Pollonia – One of the best areas to stay if you want peace, great food and a seaside vibe. Ideal for couples or a relaxed holiday!!
  • Adamas – The most convenient base, especially for first-time visitors. You’ll find hotels, studios, restaurants, and easy access to transport, ferries and car rentals.
  • Firopotamos / Klima area – For something truly unique, you can stay near the iconic syrmata houses and enjoy one of the most picturesque settings in Greece (limited options, but unforgettable). Angel’s tip: I stayed in “Billy’s boathouse” in Fyropotamos village and it was one of the most unique stays of my life!

Villages to Visit

Plaka, the capital of Milos:
Charming alleys, boutique shops and one of the best sunset views in Milos from the church and Plaka Castle.

Trypiti:
Traditional village with windmills, the Catacombs of Milos and the Ancient Theater overlooking the sea. The Catacombs are an ancient underground Christian burial site near Trypiti village on the island of Milos. They date back to the 1st-5th century AD and are considered one of the most important early Christian monuments in Greece. The site consists of carved rock tunnels and tombs and offers a glimpse into early Christian life in the Aegean.

Klima, Mandrakia & Fyropotamos:
Iconic colorful fishermen’s houses (syrmata) right on the water – perfect for golden hour photos and some of the most photographed spots in Greece. Angel’s tip: If you can stay in one syrma, you will not regret it!! Pure magic!

Pollonia:
A relaxed seaside village with an elegant vibe and many dining options!

Adamas:
The main port town, best base for staying – with shops, restaurants, cafes and nightlife.

Beaches to Explore

  • Sarakiniko: Probably the most iconic beach in Milos. White volcanic rock formations make it look like a lunar landscape!! The contrast with the deep blue sea is unforgettable. Magical at sunrise too!
  • Tsigrado: A hidden gem accessed through a narrow cliff path and rope descent. (a bit scary!!) Small, dramatic and incredibly photogenic!
  • Fyriplaka: A long sandy beach with colorful cliffs in shades of red, orange and white. There are beach bars and sunbeds available.
  • Kleftiko : Only accessible by boat. Famous for its white cliffs, sea caves and turquoise waters. This is one of the most magical swimming spots in Greece!!
  • Plathiena: A quieter sandy beach near Plaka in Northern Milos, ideal for sunset views.
  • Provatas: A family-friendly sandy beach with shallow waters and easy access. There is a hotel and some sunbeds but very pricey ( 50-80 euros per set)
  • Gerakas: magical and accessible only by boat.
  • Paleochori: Known for its volcanic activity and warm underwater spots. You can even find tavernas serving food cooked using geothermal heat.
  • Fyropotamos: One of the most photogenic beaches on the island, surrounded by traditional syrmata houses! This is where I stayed!
  • Papafragkas: a small cove with a slightly difficult access via a narrow path. It consists of sea caves and natural rock formations and if you swim through the opening under the rock, you can pass between two connected hidden coves..
  • Agia Kyriaki Beach: A peaceful beach with clear waters and beautiful views.
  • Achivadolimni: The longest sandy beach in Milos, popular for windsurfing and planes watching. Set umbrella and sunbeds 20 euros.
  • Alogomandra Beach: A picturesque beach with a natural rock cave providing shade.
  • Papikinou: The main beach of Adamas, just a short walk from the port. Angel’s tip: I saw a seal there!!
  • Thiorichia (Sulfur Mines) – truly otherworldly

…and so many more hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Don’t miss

  • Don’t miss a boat tour around Milos, especially to Kleftiko – one of the most magical places in Greece with caves, cliffs, and unreal turquoise waters.

Angel’s tip: I highly recommend Navy blue yachting for a private luxury-style cruise experience!

  • And if you’re lucky enough to be there during a panigiri (local Greek festival), don’t miss it!! These traditional village festivals are full of live music, dancing, local food and an atmosphere that really shows the heart of Greek island culture.

Day Trips

  • Polyaigos – wild, untouched paradise with insane blue waters
  • Kimolos – charming and peaceful island just next door (worth staying a few nights if you can)

Milos is one of the most visually striking islands in Greece and in my opinion EPIC!! It combines natural beauty, authentic village life and unforgettable beaches in a way that feels both wild and welcoming.

Whether you come for the beaches, the boat trips, or the sunset views, Milos leaves a lasting impression – the kind that makes you want to come back again!!
