I have to admit… Syros completely exceeded my expectations. As the capital of the Cyclades, I expected a beautiful island-but I didn’t expect to be this impressed. Syros combines elegant architecture, rich history, authentic local culture and crystal-clear waters in a way that feels completely different from the typical Cycladic destination. From the neoclassical charm of Ermoupoli and the picturesque alleys of Ano Syros to its delicious local cuisine and relaxed atmosphere, this island truly surprised me.
If you’re planning a trip, here are my favorite places, experiences and tips to help you make the most of your visit.
Accommodation: Ideally stay in the port / town. You will have so many options not only for food but for nightlife & shopping as well.
Car: A car/scooter is necessary to discover the island. You can book from this link for a good price!
Transfer: Syros has an airport with usual flights from Athens (duration 30 minutes) The most common though is by ferry in 2-4 hrs from Piraeus port. You can book your tickets here: Ferryscanner.com.
Birthplace of Rebetiko: Syros is the birthplace of Markos Vamvakaris, one of Greece’s most influential musicians and the “father” of rebetiko music. As you wander through Ano Syros, you’ll find tributes to his life and legacy, and if you’re lucky, you might even hear live bouzouki music in one of the traditional tavernas!
10+1 THINGS TO DO IN SYROS ISLAND
1.Explore Ermoupoli. Spend some time wandering through Ermoupoli, the elegant capital of the Cyclades and the island’s main port. Its charming streets are lined with boutique shops, cafés, bars, and excellent restaurants, making it the perfect place to explore from morning until late at night.
As you stroll around, you’ll discover beautiful neoclassical mansions, marble-paved alleys, lively squares and hidden corners full of character that make Ermoupoli one of Greece’s most unique island towns!
2.One of the most impressive landmarks in Syros is the Ermoupoli Town Hall, which dominates the magnificent Miaouli Square. Designed by the renowned German architect Ernst Ziller, it is considered one of the most beautiful town halls in Greece and a symbol of the island’s rich history and prosperity.
The square in front is lined with cafés and restaurants, making it the perfect place to relax, enjoy a coffee, and soak up the atmosphere of Ermoupoli. Angel’s tip: Visit both during the day and again in the evening when the building is beautifully illuminated and the square comes alive with locals and visitors!
3. No visit to Syros is complete without wandering through Ano Syros, the island’s charming medieval settlement. Get lost in its narrow marble alleys, discover boutique shops, cozy cafés, traditional tavernas and hidden bars around every corner!! As you climb higher, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views over Ermoupoli and the Aegean Sea.
Angel’s tip: Visit in the late afternoon or around sunset, when the temperatures are cooler, the views are magical and the village comes alive with locals and visitors enjoying dinner and drinks!!
Angel’s tip: Don’t miss a drink in “Theosis bar” in Ano Syros with amazing cocktails and unique names each one.
4.The beaches in Syros aren’t the island’s biggest highlight, but the water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming! Here are my favorites:
- Agathopes Beach (my favorite!) – A beautiful sandy beach with shallow, turquoise water. I especially loved ONO Beach Bar, which serves excellent food and cocktails (a bit pricey, but worth it!).
- Komito Beach – A beautiful sandy beach with crystal-clear water, a beach bar, water sports, and sunbeds. Stay until sunset if you can—the views are stunning! There isn’t much natural shade, so I recommend arriving early.
- Galissas Beach – One of the island’s most popular sandy beaches, with shallow waters, sunbeds, and plenty of facilities.
- Kini Beach – Another great sandy beach with calm, shallow water, ideal for a relaxing swim and watching the sunset.
- Μegas Gialos – A long sandy neach with calm, shallow waters, sunbeds and perfect for families!
- Delfini Beach – A peaceful beach surrounded by nature, perfect if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.
- Vari Beach – Sheltered from the wind, with shallow water, making it ideal for families with children.
- Azolimnos Beach – One of the closest beaches to Ermoupoli, with restaurants, cafés and easy access.
- Varvarousa, Marmari & Gria Spilia – Remote beaches on the island’s northwest coast, accessible mainly by boat or hiking, with some of the clearest waters in Syros.
Angel’s tip: If you have time, book a boat tour to the northwestern coast. You’ll discover hidden beaches that most visitors never get to see and enjoy some of the most pristine waters on the island.
Angel’s tip: If you want a sunbed at ONO Beach Bar, make a reservation several days in advance, especially during the high season.

5. If you’re looking for a swim without leaving Ermoupoli, head to Ciel Syros in the Asteria area. It’s not a traditional beach, but a stylish seaside spot with a wooden deck, sunbeds, and a beach bar overlooking the crystal-clear Aegean! You can swim or dive straight from the deck, making it a fun and unique experience just a few minutes from the city center.
Angel’s tip: Visit in the late afternoon for a swim followed by a cocktail while enjoying one of the best sunset spots in Ermoupoli.
6.Explore Syros Beyond the Beaches
Syros offers much more than beautiful beaches! If you want to discover the island from a different perspective, there are plenty of experiences to choose from.
-Take a speedboat tour to the untouched northwestern coast, where you’ll visit secluded beaches such as Agios Stefanos, Varvaroussa, Aetos, Lia, Megas Liakos, Marmari, and Gria Spilia. Most of these beaches are only accessible by boat, and you’ll have time to swim in whichever one you like most.
-Join a guided hiking tour to explore hidden trails, traditional villages, and spectacular viewpoints.
-Experience a food tour and discover Syros through its local cuisine, traditional products and authentic flavors.
-Go horseback riding and enjoy the island’s countryside with experienced local guides.
Angel’s tip: If you’re staying for more than 2-3 days, book at least one organized experience. It’s the best way to discover parts of Syros that most visitors never get to see!! Details here and here.
7.Don’t miss San Michalis Village for sunset!
This peaceful hilltop village offers breathtaking views over the island and is the perfect spot for a relaxed evening. Don’t miss to eat in “Steadi Kafeneio”. A truly authentic dining experience you shouldn’t miss. This charming family-run taverna serves traditional homemade dishes using seasonal ingredients, many of them grown in the owners’ own garden. Angel’s tip: Visit around sunset to enjoy the incredible views before sitting down for dinner. It’s one of the most memorable dining experiences on the island!
8.Don’t miss the Apollon Theater, one of Syros’ most iconic landmarks. Built in 1864, this elegant theater is considered a miniature version of La Scala in Milan and reflects the island’s rich cultural heritage. Its architecture was inspired by several famous Italian theaters, making it a must-visit for history and architecture lovers.
Opening Hours: Daily: 10:00-14:00 & 18:00-21:00
Angel’s tip: Even if you’re not attending a performance, step inside to admire its beautiful interior. It’s small, charming and one of the highlights of Ermoupoli.
Apollon Theater
9.One of the most beautiful landmarks in Ermoupoli is the Church of Agios Nikolaos, an impressive Orthodox church located just a short walk from the harbor. Known for its grand architecture, marble details, and stunning interior, it’s one of the island’s must-see attractions.The church is often called “Agios Nikolaos of the Rich” to distinguish it from “Agios Nikolaos of the Poor”, located in Ano Syros.
Angel’s tip: Combine your visit with a walk through the elegant Vaporia district, one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Syros, just a few steps away.
You can’t leave Syros without trying its world-famous loukoumi! This traditional Greek sweet is made with sugar, starch, water, and flavored with ingredients like rose, bergamot, mastic, or citrus, often topped with powdered sugar or filled with nuts. One of the best places to try it is Leivadaras, a historic local producer known for its high-quality handmade loukoumia.
Angel’s tip: Pick up a mixed box with different flavors-it makes a perfect souvenir or gift to take home!
11.Taste the amazing food you can find in many restaurants of the island! Especially fish and seafood. Recommendations?
- “De la gracia” and “Meltemi” with local modern dishes from Syros in Agathopes beach
- “To tsipouradiko tis Myrsinis”, “Laoutari Kafreneio” and “Giannena Grill house” in Ermoupoli as well.
- “Amvix” and “Solo Grano” for Italian in Ermoupoli.
- “O Mitsos” for meat in Alithini village
- “Achladi” restaurant next to the sea
- “Dyo tzitzikia sta almyrikia” in village Kini: a picturesque seaside fishing village where you can taste local food flavors and aromas in taverns and cafes situated along the small port.
- “Nikolas Taverna” in Chroussa village for meat.
- “MerSeana” in Azolimnos for creative dishes!
- “To Steadi kafeneio” in San Michalis village, as mentioned above.
Go for brunch in Armadillo coffee brewery in Ermoupoli and in OKIO cafe bar at the port.
For crepes visit “Petit Syros” and for ice-cream “Django Gelato”.
