Trikala is one of those places that genuinely surprised me – in the best way. A city that perfectly blends innovation with tradition, it’s widely known as Greece’s “smart city,” but beyond that title, it’s a destination full of charm, nature and year-round experiences.
Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or a road trip through mainland Greece, Trikala makes an ideal base to explore some of the country’s most unique landscapes.
During the festive season, Trikala transforms into one of the most magical destinations in Greece thanks to the famous Mill of the Elves – the largest Christmas theme park in the country. Think twinkling lights, festive markets, activities for all ages and a truly fairytale-like atmosphere.
But Trikala isn’t just a beautiful city.
The real highlight of the region lies just a short drive away: the breathtaking Meteora. These towering rock pillars topped with centuries-old monasteries create one of the most surreal landscapes you’ll ever see and yes, it’s 100% a must-visit. Whether you explore them by car, hike between viewpoints or simply soak in the views, Meteora is unforgettable!!!

- Meteora Monasteries: One of the most surreal landscapes in Greece and honestly, in all of Europe. Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where massive rock pillars rise dramatically from the ground, topped with centuries-old monasteries that seem to defy gravity. Originally, there were 24 monasteries built by monks seeking isolation and spiritual connection. Today, 6 are still active and open to visitors, each offering a unique perspective, history and breathtaking views over the Thessalian plain. Beyond the cultural and religious significance, Meteora is a dream destination for nature lovers and photographers. The scenery constantly changes depending on the light, making sunrise and sunset the most magical times to visit.You can explore the area by:
• driving between viewpoints
• hiking scenic trails connecting the rocks
• joining guided tours to learn about the history and monastic lifeAngel’s tip: Wear comfortable shoes and modest clothing (covered shoulders & knees are required to enter monasteries). Try to visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and don’t skip the sunset viewpoints, they’re unreal.
- Portaikos Bridge (Pyli village): A beautiful stone bridge in a peaceful natural setting-ideal for a quick scenic stop. Free entrance.
- Ropoto Church: A fascinating and slightly surreal “leaning” church. Angel’s tip: Approach with caution and respect any safety warnings but it’s definitely worth seeing if you’re in the area.
- Elati: A picturesque mountain village with traditional stone houses, cozy tavernas and forest trails.
- Paleokaria Waterfalls: A dreamy nature spot with a small waterfall and stone bridge-perfect for photos and a short walk.

- Pertouli Ski Center: Ideal for winter sports, snow activities and even horse riding-while in summer it turns into a peaceful hiking destination.
Chorovates Gorge: A lesser-known natural gem, perfect for exploring and immersing yourself in raw nature.- Aspropotamos area: A tranquil region with rivers, small waterfalls and lush landscapes-great for slow travel moments.
- Kalampaka: A charming town at the foot of Meteora-perfect as a base for visiting the monasteries.

• Elati village – Perfect if you want a cozy, mountain escape surrounded by nature

• ~3.5 hours from Athens
• ~2.5 hours from Thessaloniki

I stayed in Trikala city – it’s less picturesque than the nearby villages, but offers plenty of nightlife, dining options and is a convenient base to reach all the attractions mentioned above.
Trikala is one of those underrated Greek destinations that truly has it all-nature, culture, gastronomy, and unique nearby experiences. Whether you’re visiting for the festive magic, exploring Meteora, or simply looking for a different kind of Greek getaway, this region deserves a spot on your list.
