One of the most famous winter destinations in Greece and a place Athenians choose very often!
If you’re looking for a destination in Greece that feels authentic, untouched and deeply connected to nature, Arkadia in the Peloponnese should be at the top of your list!!
Far from the crowded islands, this region offers a completely different side of Greece – mountain villages, dramatic landscapes, historic monasteries and cozy local tavernas with mainly meat. It’s the kind of place where you slow down… and actually enjoy it.
Where is Arkadia?
To begin with, Peloponnese is divided into 7 major regions:
- Korinthia
- Achaia
- Argolida
- Arkadia
- Ileia
- Messinia. Angel’s tip: Curious about Messinia? Read all about it here.
- and Lakonia. Angel’s tip: Curious about Lakonia? Read all about it here.
Arkadia is located in the heart of the Peloponnese, about 2-2.5 hours drive from Athens. It’s perfect for a weekend escape or even a longer road trip if you want to explore more of mainland Greece!!

Why Visit Arkadia?
What makes Arkadia special is its diversity:
– Mountain landscapes that feel like Switzerland
– Traditional stone villages
– Stunning hiking routes
– Rich history and culture
– Amazing local food
It’s a year-round destination, but it’s especially magical in autumn and winter when everything feels cozy and atmospheric!!
Angel’s tip: Car is necessary to discover Peloponnese, if you don’t have, rent one from Athens from this site I use too! With this way you support my blog, thank you!
Must-Visit Villages in Arkadia
- Dimitsana: One of the most famous villages in the region, built amphitheatrically on a mountain slope. Stone houses, narrow alleys and incredible views. Don’t miss open-Air Water Power Museum! Angel’s tip: It is a great base for exploring Arkadia and combining it with rafting in Lousios.

- Stemnitsa: A beautiful, quieter village with a more refined, traditional feel and a charming central square. It is the starting point for hiking trails and has silversmithing tradition.

- Vytina: Perfect if you’re looking for a lively village with cafés, shops and easy access. Angel’s tip: It is a great base for exploring Arkadia surrounded by pine forests.

- Karitaina: A small, fairytale-like village with a medieval character, a castle with nice views (free entrance) and stone tower houses – often called the “Toulouse of Greece.”

- Andritsaina: A charming and less touristy village that feels incredibly authentic with traditional stone architecture.

Nature & Outdoor Experiences
Arkadia is a dream for nature lovers.
- Lousios Gorge: One of the most impressive landscapes in the Peloponnese. You can hike through the gorge, cross rivers, and visit monasteries built into cliffs.
- Vrontos Waterfall: A hidden natural gem surrounded by lush greenery. Especially beautiful in spring, when the water flow is stronger.
Perfect for:
– A short nature escape
– Photos and relaxing moments
– Cooling off during warmer days
- Rafting at Lousios or Alfeios River: If you want something more adventurous, rafting here is an unforgettable experience – especially in spring.

- Hiking Trails (Menalon Trail): A certified trail connecting villages like Dimitsana and Stemnitsa – perfect for a unique slow-travel experience.
Small deviation
Although technically part of Achaia, the Ladonas River is very close to Arkadia and is one of the best places in the Peloponnese for rafting, kayaking and outdoor activities as well .
Surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic canyon landscapes, it feels completely untouched and is ideal if you want a more adventurous side of the region.
Ghi & Hydor: A beautiful outdoor activity base near the river, offering rafting experiences, nature activities, and a relaxed riverside setting. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring Ladonas.
Angel’s tip: After your river activities, the best nearby stop is: Tzolas traditional tavern for food and a slow walk through Dafni Village!
A quiet, authentic village where you can experience real rural Arcadian life – stone houses, calm streets, and a timeless atmosphere.
Unique Places You Shouldn’t Miss
- Monastery of Prodromos: Built literally into the rock, hanging above the gorge – one of the most impressive monasteries in Greece.

- Monastery of St. John the Baptist: Another breathtaking monastery set in nature, offering peaceful surroundings and incredible views. It’s less crowded and feels truly spiritual.
- Philosophou Monastery: A historic and peaceful spot hidden deep in the gorge, ideal for those who want to explore the region’s history.
- Cave of Kapsia: One of the most impressive caves in Greece, with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

- Church of Agia Foteini: One of the most unusual churches in Greece, Agia Foteini in Mantineia is unlike anything you’ve seen before. Its architecture is a mix of different styles, materials and influences – combining stone, ancient elements, and Byzantine details in a way that feels almost surreal!!

Skiing in Arkadia
Arkadia isn’t just a cozy mountain escape – it’s also one amazing winter destination in the Peloponnese thanks to the Mainalo Ski Center. Located at an altitude of around 1,600m, it’s a great option if you want a quick ski getaway without traveling far from Athens.
Why visit Mainalo in winter:

– Surrounded by beautiful forests
