THE ULTIMATE SIFNOS TRAVEL GUIDE

If you’re looking for a Greek island that combines picturesque villages, crystal-clear beaches, incredible food and authentic Cycladic charm, Sifnos should be at the top of your list!

Unlike some of the more crowded Cycladic islands, Sifnos has managed to preserve its traditional character while offering excellent restaurants, beautiful boutique hotels, scenic hiking trails and some of the best gastronomy in Greece.

After spending several days exploring the island, here’s everything I think you should know before visiting.

HOW TO GET IN SIFNOS

  • The easiest way to reach Sifnos is by ferry from Piraeus Port but there are also from Lavrion port. Angel’s tip: You can book ferry tickets like me from this link and support my site at no cost to you!
  • Travel time: approximately 2.5-5 hours, depending on the ferry.
  • There is no airport on the island.

HOW MANY DAYS TO YOU NEED IN SIFNOS?

I recommend spending 4-5 days (3-4 nights) in Sifnos to truly experience everything the island has to offer. This gives you enough time to explore its beautiful villages, relax on several beaches, enjoy its incredible gastronomy, visit the island’s main landmarks and experience its laid-back Cycladic atmosphere without rushing.

Of course, if you enjoy hiking or simply want a slower pace, you could easily stay even longer.

GETTING AROUND

Although buses connect the main villages during summer, I highly recommend renting a car or scooter if you want to explore the island properly.

Some of Sifnos’ most beautiful beaches are reached via dirt roads or a short hiking trail, so having your own transportation gives you much more flexibility.

Angel’s tip: If you want a car with a good price, you can compare companies and book from this site, like me.

BEST VILLAGES TO VISIT IN SIFNOS

Apollonia

The lively capital of Sifnos, filled with boutiques, cafés, restaurants, bars and beautiful whitewashed streets.

I recommend visiting both during the day (morning before the heat) and at night – the atmosphere is completely different and both are equally beautiful.

Kastro

Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades. Built on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, Kastro is a medieval settlement with narrow alleys, traditional houses, stunning sea views, and one of the island’s most famous sunset spots.

Don’t miss the walk to the iconic Church of the Seven Martyrs.

Cheronissos

A tiny fishing village in northern Sifnos that completely stole my heart.

Crystal-clear water, colourful fishing boats, excellent seafood tavernas, and one of the most authentic atmospheres on the island. Perfect for a long seaside lunch.

Artemonas

Elegant, peaceful and incredibly photogenic.

Artemonas is known for its impressive mansions, charming alleyways, beautiful churches, and relaxed atmosphere. It’s also the perfect place for dessert after dinner.

Faros

A picturesque seaside village with calm beaches, beautiful walking paths and easy access to Glyfo and Fassolou beaches.

Vathi

A peaceful bay with shallow turquoise water, making it perfect for swimming and relaxing.

It’s also home to some of the island’s best tavernas!! Angel’s tip: Loved Tsikali!

Kamares

The main port of Sifnos and your first introduction to the island.

Besides being the arrival point, Kamares has a long sandy beach, plenty of restaurants, cafés and beautiful sunsets.

Ano & Kato Petali

Two traditional neighbouring villages connected by charming alleys, whitewashed houses and beautiful churches.

BEST BEACHES

Vathi beach

A beautiful sheltered bay with shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water, making it ideal for families and anyone looking for a relaxing swim. The waterfront is lined with excellent tavernas, making it a perfect place to spend the entire day!

Angel’s tip: Don’t miss lunch at Tsikali, one of my favorite traditional tavernas on the island, known for its homegrown ingredients and authentic Sifnian cuisine. I spent the day in Nostos beach bar with 40 euros the set for 1 umbrella and 2 sunbeds.

Platis Gialos beach

The most cosmopolitan and popular beach on the island! It is an organized one, featuring soft golden sand, calm waters, sunbeds and beach bars.

Angel’s tip: A perfect combination is spending the morning at the beach followed by lunch at Omega3, one of the island’s most famous seafood restaurants (reservation highly recommended).

Kamares beach

The island’s main sandy beach, located next to the port. Thanks to its calm, shallow waters and easy access, it’s a great choice for families and the perfect spot to enjoy a swim after arriving on the island.

Faros

This area is home to 3 beautiful beaches (Faros, Glyfo and Fassolou) the one close to another, making it easy to explore them in a single visit. A peaceful seaside village with crystal-clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s also the starting point for walking to the nearby beach of Glyfo.

Fassolou

A quiet, unorganized beach with beautiful turquoise water surrounded by natural scenery. Perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds.

Glyfo

One of my favorite hidden gems in Sifnos. This tiny beach, reached via a short footpath from Faros, feels like a little paradise thanks to its incredibly clear water and peaceful setting. You can reach via a small path from Faros beach. (and also connected to Chrysopigi monastery)

Chrysopigi (Apokofto Beach)

Located beneath the iconic Monastery of Chrysopigi, this beach offers crystal-clear water and one of the island’s most spectacular backdrops. Don’t miss swimming around the famous rocky peninsula.

Fykiada

One of Sifnos’ most secluded beaches, reached by a scenic hiking trail. Ideal for those looking for complete tranquility and an untouched natural landscape.

Cheronissos

A charming little beach beside the traditional fishing village, with calm emerald waters and colorful fishing boats creating one of the most picturesque settings on the island!!

Vroulidia

A remote beach surrounded by rugged cliffs and untouched nature. Access is easier with a 4×4 vehicle, but the peaceful atmosphere makes the journey worthwhile.

Poulati

A beautiful rocky swimming spot near Kastro with deep, crystal-clear water. Best visited on calm days when the sea is sheltered from the wind, making it perfect for snorkeling and cliff jumping.
